Clinton Campaign Official: Team Trump Needs Some ‘Introspection’ About How They Won
Last week Hillary Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri got in a heated back-and-forth with Kellyanne Conway over whether the Doanld Trump campaign gave a platform to white supremacists. Conway took offense at the idea as Palmieri said, “If providing a platform for white supremacists makes me a brilliant tactician, I am proud to have lost. I would rather lose than win the way you guys did.”
Conway shot back, “How about, it’s Hillary Clinton, she doesn’t connect with people? How about, they have nothing in common with her? How about, she doesn’t have an economic message?”
Well, Palmieri responded to that exchange in a Washington Post op-ed yesterday. She argued that her side has been gracious in defeat, writing, “Our candidate gave us a good model to follow. She had the grace to call Trump on election night to congratulate him and concede… The campaign has ended, and we accept that Trump won.”
She claims that they’ve been doing introspection on the left, but Team Trump hasn’t:
A good bit of the post-election analysis has centered on what our campaign should have done differently. That’s appropriate. We should think long and hard about why we lost. Trust me, we have.
But it’s also important for the winners of this campaign to think long and hard about the voters who rejected them. I haven’t seen much evidence of such introspection from the Trump side. That’s concerning.
As far as she’s concerned, the Trump campaign did “empower” the white nationalist movement. She cites Steve Bannon, white nationalist Richard Spencer, and David Duke in her op-ed and brings up recent hate crimes across the country.
She says the onus needs to be on Trump and his team to unite the country, saying, “If Trump expects the Americans who did not vote for him to accept him as president, he needs to show that he accepts all of them as Americans.”
Of course, as writers like Glenn Greenwald have pointed out, Democrats seem to be blaming external factors on their own loss rather than, well, introspection.
