‘GET SMART U.S.’: Trump Unsurprisingly Responds to Paris Louvre Attack to Prove His Point
It was just a matter of time until President Donald Trump took to Twitter to respond to the reports out of Paris that a machete-wielding man shouting “allahu akbar” was shot while trying to enter the famed Louvre Friday. After all, it would appear as if it fits in with the Commander in Chief’s long running campaign rhetoric that radical Islamic terrorism must be stopped.
And sure enough, within an hour of the Paris news reaching American media outlets, Trump whipped out his Android device and fired off the following note:
A new radical Islamic terrorist has just attacked in Louvre Museum in Paris. Tourists were locked down. France on edge again. GET SMART U.S.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 3, 2017
“France on edge again,” he wrote. “GET SMART U.S.” There is no indication at this time that the White House has been in touch with French authorities or French President François Hollande about the failed attack yet.
On Friday, the man — who by some reports had two machetes and two backpacks — was shot down by a soldier after he attacked a security guard outside the Louvre. French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says that the incident was “obviously of a terrorist nature.”
President Trump put the fight against radical Islamic terrorism front and center during his campaign; the tragic events that unfolded around the globe last year in places like Paris, Berlin, and San Bernardino seemed to strengthen his campaign numbers, as supporters drew a contrast between his strong stump rhetoric and that of the Obama administration, who famously eschewed references to the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism,” for fear of Muslim alienation.
It’s a phrase Trump has championed since Day 1, further referencing it in his Tweet Friday morning.
Last year, Trump said, “Containing the spread of radical Islam must be a major foreign policy goal of the United States.” Shortly before the election, he continued, “My administration will aggressively pursue joint and coalition military operations to crush and destroy ISIS, international cooperation to cut off their funding, expanded intelligence sharing, and cyberwarfare to disrupt and disable their propaganda and recruiting.”
