Italy High Court Overturns Amanda Knox Acquittal, Orders Retrial
Italy’s highest criminal court overturned Amanda Knox‘s acquittal on murder charges and ordered a new trial. Knox stood trial for the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher, who died of knife wounds in their apartment in 2007.
The court also overturned Knox’s then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito’s acquittal. In a statement, Knox deemed prosecutors’ theory of her involvement in the murder “completely unfounded.” Per the Associated Press:
She says: “No matter what happens, my family and I will face this continuing legal battle as we always have, confident in the truth and with our heads held high in the face of wrongful accusations and unreasonable adversity.”
Knox, 25, is now living in the Seattle area, according to NBC News — and cannot be forced to return to Italy under their laws, but could be tried in absentia.
