New Era: Jill Abramson Begins As New York Times Executive Editor Today
It’s a new day at the New York Times, and for the first time ever, there is a woman’s name at the top of the masthead. Today marks the beginning of Jill Abramson‘s reign as executive editor of the Grey Lady. She’ll take the helm from Bill Keller, who announced in June that we has stepping down from the position he’s held the since 2003 in order to spend more time writing.
Now the first female executive editor in the paper’s 160 year history, Abramson has been with the Times since 1997, and has served as managing editor since 2003. In 2010, she moved briefly to NYTimes.com, where she worked to advance the paper’s digital strategy — a move that, at the time, was assumed a test for Abramson, a chance for her to “flex [her] editor muscles.” This experience will likely be influential as she moves forward with the paper.
This is a day she has long been working towards. ”In my house growing up, The Times substituted for religion,” she has said. “If The Times said it, it was the absolute truth.” Jill, this is your time.
