Jill Abramson Is The New York Times‘ New Executive Editor
Huge news in the world of print, and kitten videos: Jill Abramson has been named as The New York Times‘ new executive editor, taking over for Bill Keller, who is stepping down to become a “mere” writer at the paper.
Abramson, now the Times‘s first female executive editor, has spent seven years as its managing editor. In 2010, she took a hiatus from the paper in order to look into digital strategy in advance of the NYTimes.com paywall. She had formerly worked as an investigative reporter and Washington bureau chief for the paper.
Abramson officially takes the helm on September 6th.
A September 2010 New York magazine profile of Abramson described the seasoned reporter and editor as being perhaps more vital to the Times brand than Keller himself, dubbing her the paper’s “heiress apparent:”
She can be an imperious boss, critical when she thinks the Times is falling behind competitors. In many respects, she’s more alpha than Keller, with a confidence that makes some Times people still smarting from the Raines era a little nervous. And she’s not the only one in the hunt for the job.
In addition, Dean Baquet moves from holding the position of the paper’s Washington bureau chief to becoming its managing editor.
