Jon Stewart Takes On Glenn Beck And Gold

video

beck_goldFox News Host Glenn Beck talks nightly about the looming collapse of the American economic structure. He also talks about the wisdom of investing money in gold, a commodity that typically increases of value during times of economic stress. Oh by the way, Beck is a paid spokesman for Goldline, a company who offers a full range of precious metals (like gold) to investors. Politico and Jeff Bercovici have reported this cozy relationship; but now enters Jon Stewart.

Stewart sum’s up the relationship thusly: “This is kind of a nice little feeback loop. Glenn Beck is paid by Goldline to drum up interest in Gold, which increases in value during times of fear, an emotion reinforced nightly on Fox by Glenn Beck”

Nice job Jon! Olbermann pointed this out weeks ago. It’s what they call a “conflict of interest” in the “news” business.

  • ChrisNH

Wait. This is a ‘Time of Fear?’ I thought this was the time of ‘Hope & Change?’ That’s what all the bumper stickers and artistic posters said, anyway. Wasn’t it supposed to be raining candy by now? Poor Jon Stewart; nightly rage-filled volleys lobbed at Fox News and to no effect. Maybe he’s got his own little Liberal echo-chamber like the NYT does; Liberals whining to other Liberals.

  • timzank

@roxunsteady: {It’s what they call a “conflict of interest” in the “news” business.} My understanding was you (as well as Beck) believe him (Beck) not to be a “news man” and further that Fox is not a “news channel’ ergo, no conflict, correct?

Which is it? Your circular logic is comical.

  • ImNotBlue

On another note… I’m glad Mediaite took down the CNN ad wallpaper.

Although, since I can remember at least two days in the past… it does make this “conflict of interest” position a little hard to swallow… especially coming from these parts.

  • m

Jon hit Beck where it hurt him.

  • timzank

@m…yeah, being dissed by the likes of Jon Stewart is really gonna set him back.

  • Snipzor

    @timzank

I know right, Jon never set anyone back. Not once. Well, he did do this with Crossfire, and he did deliver the hard hitting interview on Jim Cramer a while back, and with Betsy McCaughey as well. Nope, had no effect on them one bit. Well except for the fact that Crossfire was scrapped after he was on the show, Jim Cramer is now openly mocked and has had his credibility destroyed, and Betsy McCaughey resigned from her position from the board of directors the day after the interview.

Nope, Jon has zero political clout. Not one bit. Which is why the right-wing feels threatened by Jon.

  • germ

What? No post on Olbermann calling out ABC’s David Wright for selectively editing the John Stewart “Climategate” clip, but then selectively edits the clip himself?

Wow, Mediaite, you aren’t worried about credibility are you?

  • changemonger

Wow… alot of fuss about nothing.

As DVR and HDradio become more popular, advertisors are getting more creative…. no surprise there, right?

Well now, talk show hosts are doing their advertising live at the end or beginning of segments before their audience zone out. Sometimes Glenn would tie it into the segment if he were talking about the slow of the economy – and not seperating them as content and advertising.

All those concerned will be happy to know that he is now seperating them, and has since made it very clear that he is a PAID spokeman.

    Next crisis please.

  • J Baustian

Does Jon Stewart use all the products advertised on his show and on his network?

I like Jon Stewart and Glenn Beck. Is that wrong?

  • jmundstuk

Well, ChrisHN, the fear has mongered by the Right, your pals. It would be much more a time of hope and change if the opposition had not decided to make paranoia its political program. Hope, change, and a lot of hard work.

So despite overwhelmingly controlling the House, the Senate, AND the Presidency… the Democrats must still blame the Republicans for their failings. Wow! It must be nice to never take responsibility. Too bad nobody’s buying it.

  • germ

Don’t you know that the progressive mantra is “No Personal Responsibility” – everything wrong is something else’s fault.

  • Jim R

Excellent marketing savvy by the gold interests, nothing less or more than capitalism at work.

Anyone peddling doom, gloom and fear with a worshipful audience is a natural target. Now we see how Republican Capitalism works – destroy an economy and then profit from the country’s efforts to clean up their mess.

  • changemonger

    @ Jim R:

It amazes me that anyone with a home, a car, clothes, and food would criticize capitalism. The very luxeries you use to spew your contempt (computer / internet and all facets therein) are only there because a capitalist made it possible. Capitalists innovate, capitalists produce, capitalists employ, capitalist pave the roads with tax dollars, and capitalism is why we have the wealth to help the nations we do. But you’ll focus on the few big companies that get national attention, while ignoring the neighbor down the street who can’t grow his business and hire anyone because the current admististration is about to regulate the hell out of his industry.

Note to the lofty Dems: heres why Obama is not going to get elected again. The first time voters did their part… some got out of bed that day, some skipped Judge Judy, some left the shelters, and others got out of line at the welfare office to go vote for him. They voted for hope, and they voted for change….but the checks never came. Do you really think they’re going to do that again? No. Theyre going to go back to bed or jump back in line, and brace themselves for another decade of blaming someone else.

You do know that gold is being advertised on virtually EVERY television channel… from left-wing MSNBC to kid-friend Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

Sorry to let facts get in the way of your ludicrous theories… again…

Although, I do like your theory of “Republican Capitalism.” But to me, it sounds a lot like the theory behind Al Gore’s “Global Warming” campaign. Convince everyone that they’re in immediate peril (despite what the science actually says), and then profit off of it by selling bogus “carbon credits,” and lobbying for energy companies (who give you a “thank you” when they get the government contract).

    Oh well.

  • Ben Linus

    @Snipzor the moron.

I remember when Crossfire was canceled — it’s ratings had been steadily dropping every year, and they were not getting any better. Actually, Stewart’s appearance gave them a little boost for that one show, and then the ratings went back down the toilet. It was clear that the old show could not compete anymore, it had been on the air since the early 80′s, and it already had plenty of nails in its coffin when Stewart went on, and had his little tantrum.
Do you remember his tantrum? It was clear that Stewart’s ego didn’t like being their comedic relief, and he freaked out. I mean, he took immature little pot shots at Carlson’s bow-tie for Christ’s sake. I knew Stewart had an ego problem when he was on a show with Tucker Carlson, and Stewart came off as the smug jerk. That’s quite an accomplishment.

And, Cramer? He still has his job.
Funny this is, it was during the Cramer interview when Jon Stewart admitted “This show isn’t fair… it’s not supposed to be fair… and that’s not our job.”
To any moron who followed Cramer’s advice, thinking he was (or is) a genius — good God, there is a freakin’ disclaimer on his show! What the hell is wrong with you! His show is basically a glorified infomercial.

Betsy McCaughey was a moron. Basically, that means it was a fair fight between Jon and Betsy. Anybody could have outed her and made her look like a fool, Jon didn’t do anything spectacular.

ImNotBlue, it’s called “Disaster Capitalism”, an excellent expose by Noami Klein that lays bare the Chicago Economics school of thought by Milton Freidman.

The last eight years was a continuing experiment in making government small enough to “drown it in the bathtub” (so as not to interfere with corporate profits), until of course he had to revived to bail out the Masters Of The Universe that stole the money.

Also see Trickle-Down Economics, Laffer Curve, etc.

  • Ben Linus

Here’s a nice video of Naomi Klein getting her dumb ass handed to her.
    Jim R learn here
An article about how wrong she is
    Naomi the conspiracy nut

Uh-oh, here’s one from the Daily Kos. Why? Oh, she doesn’t like Obama’s Peace Award. Then there are 92 comments about whether or not she’s an idiot. here

    Poor Naomi

  • Jelperman

Really? I noticed that one of those articles rebutted any of her claims. All they did was argue against straw men, then projected their own dishonesty onto Klein. All the proof one needs for Klein’s thesis comes from Dubya’s official biographer Mickey Herskowitz, who said that Bush told him that if he had a war or some other crisis in his administration, that he (unlike George H.W. Bush, who lost his re-election to Clinton) would be sure to milk it for all it was worth and use it to drive through the rest of his agenda.

  • Ben Linus

    Really? Jelperman? Really?
So, all you need is ONE line from ONE book and — that’s it. That is just pathetic.
I read quite a bit about her, and not just the stuff that was critical of her, and it’s obvious that she lives in some world were America is the worst country in the world, Israel is full of monsters, and socialism is the only way to go.
If you did read or watch any of the links I provided, and you still think Klein’s “thesis” is sound, then — Oh, my God. You poor fool.

In the past 8 years… the government GREW. How exactly is that an experiment in SMALLER government?

…who said that Bush told him that if he had a war or some other crisis in his administration, that he… would be sure to milk it for all it was worth and use it to drive through the rest of his agenda.

So I’m sure you’d have the same words for Hillary Clinton, and Rahm Emanuel… right?

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told an audience Friday “never waste a good crisis,” and highlighted the opportunity of rebuilding economies in a greener, less energy-intensive way.

…Clinton told young Europeans at the European Parliament that global economic turmoil provided a fresh opening. “Never waste a good crisis … Don’t waste it when it can have a very positive impact on climate change and energy security,” she said.

You’re not a hypocrite, are you?

  • Fidoohki

You know this does disturb me some…mostly because people are so desperate to get
Glenn Beck without actually debating him on the issues that they have to start embelishing if not outright fabricating these ‘Saturday morning cartoon conspiracies’ to discredit him.
