Michael Steele Scrambles To Explain RNC Presentation To Megyn Kelly

video

RNC chairman Michael Steele was called to account for the RNC presentation Politico got their hands on yesterday that featured images of President Obama as the Joker, compared Nancy Pelosi to Cruella Devil, and Harry Reid to Scooby Doo. Steele started out rather humbled telling Megyn Kelly: “You don’t defend it, it was unfortunate.” Before noting that the RNC didn’t create these images: “Those were images that were pulled off the Internet and been out in the public domain for a while.” At which point he reverted to ‘we did not throw the first stone’ defense: “I didn’t like those images of me that characterized me as a Sambo or an Uncle Tom, either” and later “there’s a pretty long track record of folks on the left playing this ugly game.”

Steele either wouldn’t say, or didn’t know, who was responsible for the presentation, and that he was looking into it because things like this cheapen the debate. When Kelly pushed him he told her that he didn’t want their discussion over it to reach HCR debate level proportions! Also, he’d prefer to talk about things that matter. Video below.

This is a non-issue. I don’t think anyone is surprised by this and Steele would have been smart to not even go on tv to criticize the presentation.

He should have put out a warm-fuzzy op-ed that could be well drafted and not come off as defensive as he did.

Great job by Megyn Kelly for pressing the Steele, somebody needs to be held accountable for this!

When I saw the headline and read the piece, I thought perhaps Ms. Kelly was going to try and redeem her “fair and balanced” in light of Jon Stewart’s piece from last night, but when I watched the clip, I learned that though she pushed at Mr. Steele some, it was basically six and a half minutes of the Chairman tamping-down criticism and putting out a potential donor fire.

Brave move for Steele to face Megyn Kelly, who is strictly committed to fair and balanced reporting – as evidenced by the Daily Show’s segment devoted to her last night!

She did push him some though, I give her credit for that. But Steele went way off the path talking about his credit report and what not. It sounded as if he was grasping for straws, which is why he should have penned an op-ed.

@marcus.lewis: To her credit, she did push at him some, but he knows that a staffer put together a package, but they’re investigating who is responsible and I believe the Politico story broke yesterday and at one time, he says that he learned of it this morning and at another time, he says something about last week.

An op-ed would’ve been one way to go, but not only are the Democrats and their netroots harping on the images, but the donor stereotypes discussed at the end could hurt the Republican’s fundraising efforts, which I believe was the focus of the meeting.

IOW: If it were me, I would’ve also tried to get in front of the story using every means at my disposal.

@Cubby: I figured that at some point the TDS “takedown” would’ve been posted, which is why I had gone ahead and grabbed the URL for the Mediaite post, where you called it.

@magister: Fair enough. I just think that this interview doesn’t help the GOP look any better (which I personally don’t mind, but question as a general PR move). Steele had to have known the type of questions he was to be asked, and I would have assumed he did what republicans do so well: stick to the message. He got off-message and it reminded me of a John Kerry moment where you just find he is rambling.

@marcus.lewis: I actually don’t think the story hurts the Republicans. Sure, the netroots are probably chirping and Olbermann will probably go off on one of those rants that nobody sees or takes seriously, but the “small donors” will just fluff it off and the “big donors” will probably joke about the ego boost, as they write the check.

Steele had to personally appear on some show, any show, so he naturally chose FOX. Had he not personally appeared, the “apology,” in its broadest sense, would have seemed hollow. Although I don’t have particularly high regard for Steele, in his chosen role, he handled this about as well as it could be handled. This is going to hurt. A significant number of Americans view the Republicans as illegitimate. To overcome this, the Republicans have tried to lob a Hail Mary Pass when they should have been grinding out yardage on the ground. This doesn’t help the ground game.

No harm no foul. Steele pointed out several instances of the left doing much worse to him during campaigns.

Jeff: You are being redundant. Those of us who know something about you know you are an utter racist, and those who know about you only from here have a pretty good idea you are. How were the Lorna Doones?

Well you didn’t watch the show and have no idea what you’re talking about. The only thing Steele brought up was some guy lifted his credit report. “several instances”? Next time watch it so you might be able (which I doubt) to understand what is said.

t-bone, I saw the whole segment, not just the snippet posted here. Think before you post, please!

Wasn’t he just on CNN a few days ago?

Didn’t that ‘roots’ group say that Steele isn’t ‘really’ black? I’d better adjust my set.

Yes, but he was not in hot water then. The RNC was behaving itself at that time.

There were actually several overt racist incidents involving Steele, but Jeff is lying when he said they came from the left. These were actually Tea Party types, although the Tea Parties were not yet infecting the body politic under that nomenclature, acting as Republicans.

  • Olby Sucks

More lies from the faux royal king. Shocker!

So there were racist attacks on Steele from the Tea Partiers… despite the Tea Party having not been organized or founded at the time. Interesting… *Rolls eyes*

How could there be any racism directed at Steele? According to the left, he’s not a ‘real’ black man anyway.
