Obama Says Trump Shouldn’t Rely Too Much on Executive Orders

Part of President Obama‘s big NPR interview out today includes the current Commander-in-Chief advising his successor not to rely too much on executive orders.

Obama has issued a total of 260 executive orders over the course of his presidency thus far, compared to 291 from George W. Bush and 364 from Bill Clinton.

The president argued that he didn’t rely on those orders so much in his first two years––when Democrats had majorities in both houses of Congress––and when Republicans took the majority in both, he insisted that he “bent over backwards” to try and work with Congress instead.

“My suggestion to the president-elect,” Obama said, “is going through the legislative process is always better, in part because it’s harder to undo.”

And yes, the president did note that Donald Trump has the ability to roll back executive orders he himself issued.
