Osama Bin Laden Journal Reveals His Worries About Al Qaeda

Among the various items recovered from Osama bin Laden‘s Pakistan compound is a handwritten journal kept by the terrorist leader.

The journal includes revealing information about the state of Al Qaeda. For instance, bin Laden, evidently concerned over increased fragmentation within the terrorist network, encouraged the group’s members to find new ways of attacking the United States, urging them, for example, to look into targeting smaller American cities and trains in addition to airplanes.

Bin Laden’s journal also reveals just how involved he was within the network, playing a role in every attack the terrorist organization has waged across the globe. He was also aware of efforts to bring him down, but was undeterred, pressing those within the network to kill as many Americans as possible in an effort to get the U.S. to withdraw its forces in Muslim nations.

This hands-on approach to the network’s various plots shows that bin Laden was not, as the U.S. had previously thought, merely a figurehead within the network, but rather an integral part of its inner workings.
