Pete came to our tent city on the Great Peace March in 1986 and he’s still there, still reminding everyone that there is a long history of folks working to bend the arc of history toward justice.

I, too, believe debt is slavery so I avoided going into debt. I worked through school and graduated with no student loans. Until my father got too old to drive I never had a car and just walked or took mass transit; I still would have made do without a car if my parents didn’t need to be driven places. I sat out the housing bubble because I knew that even with “zero down” I would not be able to keep up my mortgage payment if I lost my job. If you feel enslaved, it’s your fault. I went without all my life and I refuse to bail out your entitled a$$.

Good for you Victoria. But as I’m sure you know university tuition has skyrocketed since my college days (and I assume yours as well.) When I went to the University of Illinois in ’78, a year of in-state tuition with room & board cost around $1400. Now it’s nearly $30,000 per year. THAT’S MORE THAN A 2000% INCREASE! In the meantime, entry level wages (if a job can be found at all) have remained fairly flat thoughout that time. So you can brag and bluster all you want, but the fact is, college costs today put a much heavier financial burden on today’s students and graduates today face a harder road to financial independence than those from the previous two generations.

Did Pete Seeger talk about the “inclusion” he supported under Stalin?  You know, the “inclusion” of the grave.  And maybe Pete could share the “joy” he experienced when he found that Stalin had purposely starved about 15 million farmers.   Or Pete can talk about the inclusion and joy of Eastern Europe which was “included” and “joyful” about being made slaves to the Soviet Union.  I can see why you would think so highly of Pete Seeger.

We have great friends and a good standard of living. Our older child takes private music and horseback riding lessons. While I make a 6-figure salary, I did not go to college. I taught myself and learned on the job. We have $0 debt. It can be done if you are careful.
