Rasmussen Survey Suggests Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann Lead Among GOP Voters

According to results from a Rasmussen Reports phone survey conducted after Monday’s Republican debate, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has earned the vote of 33 percent of the poll’s respondents, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann enjoys 19 percent of the vote, and businessman Herman Cain takes 10 percent.

That’s quite a difference from April’s poll results, which saw reality TV star and mogul Donald Trump running away with 19 percent of the vote, with Romney taking 17 percent.

Rounding out the survey are Newt Gingrich with 9 percent of the vote, Congressman Ron Paul with seven percent, former governor Tim Pawlenty with six percent, and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, also with six percent. Former Governor of Utah Jon Huntsman did not participate in this week’s debate, but managed to drum up support from 2 percent of the survey’s respondents.

In addition, Romney and Bachmann are tied among primary voters who identify as Tea Party members, each earning 26 percent of those votes.

Thoughts on a Romney/Bachmann ticket in 2012? It would cover both moderate conservatives, independents, disgruntled Democrats (for Romney), and keep the Tea Party and Social Conservatives happy with Bachmann on the ticket. I can’t see this one losing to Obama.

100% right Alex. It’s not my first choice, but I think that’s what it’s gonna be and I can totally live with it after the fiasco we have now.

It seems that the debate had a big effect. The takeaway was that Romney solidified his status as the frontrunner while Bachmann proved that she is a serious and competent candidate. Low and behold here we are, with Romney the definite frontrunner and Bachmann his biggest challenger.

Ever since Huckabee dropped out, I’ve been predicting that Bachmann will likely win the Iowa caucus. I think this is even more likely now, because Pawlenty seems to have hit a wall.

Then the question will be, what happens in New Hampshire? Romney has to be the overwhelming favorite. But what if he underperforms? Or, what if Bachmann gets a big jump-start out of Iowa and is a close second in NH? Then she will have a lot of momentum headed into South Carolina and then Florida.

Bachmann is not running for vice-president, and based on the situation right now, I don’t see any reason for her to settle for vice-president. She may have weaknesses, but so does Romney. He still gets a lot of criticism for the Massachusetts health-care bill he signed, and his recent comments on global warming have set off some warning sirens. (Nobody hit him on that issue Monday night, but they are going to from now on.)

But what about HUNTSMAN??? That’s who the press truly wants to win the nomination!
