Release Date Proposed for Next Batch of Hillary Clinton Emails

hillary clintonOn Tuesday, the State Department came up with a schedule for the public release of the remaining 55,000 pages recovered from Hillary Clinton‘s private email account. Court documents state that the next series of emails will be disclosed on June 30, with further releases occurring every 60 days.

The proposal came after U.S. District Court Judge Robert Contreras rejected a previous proposal to withhold Clinton’s messages for a bulk release in early 2016. On May 19, Contreras pushed for a rolling release that would publish new emails on a more regular basis, allowing for a period of consideration before the nominating caucuses and primaries for the 2016 presidential election. Though Contreras’s proposal fell through, he still ordered the State Department to reach a definite plan by the end of the week.

Attorneys representing the Department of Justice released a court filing that acknowledged the public interest in the documents, and the necessity of creating a system to ensure the releases occur as planned. The proposal did not include the number of pages to be included in each release, but it did include a pledge to set January as the latest point for the complete release. “The Department will strive to produce as many documents as possible on each production date, and will file a status report one week after each production to inform the Court of the number of pages posted.”

Ryan James, a lawyer for Vice News‘s public-records lawsuit, and said the State Department should release new batches every two weeks under the Freedom of Information Act.

“I applaud State’s proposal to begin releasing Clinton’s emails on June 30, 2015, but I do not believe that additional rolling productions every 60 days is sufficiently frequent to enable the public to engage in fully informed discussion about Secretary Clinton’s leadership style and decisions while at the helm of the State Department.”

About 900 pages of Clinton’s emails were made public last week. One report indicated the full details that Clinton received on the Benghazi attack, as well as the administration’s struggle to settle on a public narrative.
