Video And Photos Of Fukushima Evacuation Zone Show Eerie Emptiness And Stray Dogs
As Japan reels from yet another earthquake (not to mention resulting aftershocks and power outages), officials have forced area residents to evacuate Fukushima, the prefecture housing the now-notorious Fukushima I nuclear power plant, which you’ll likely recall suffered much damage as a result of previous earthquakes and a powerful tsunami.
Newsweek offers a glimpse into the abandoned area – eerie, abandoned homes and shops (like the laundromat pictured above), perfectly empty streets, and property severely damaged by the multiple quakes and tsunami.
Japanese journalist Tetsuo Jimbo filed a report from the evacuation zone, providing video documentation of what is now a veritable ghost town.
Below is video of Jimbo heading into the zone, keeping an eye on radiation levels as he heads deeper into the impacted area. He notices that residents had to leave so quickly and suddenly that their family pets were left behind to wander the streets, alone, and livestock were left unattended in fields near the plant’s reactors:
