Watch the ‘Uncomfortable’ Teaser for MTV’s White People Documentary
MTV is airing a documentary later this month called White People. The premise? White people talking about whiteness and about how uncomfortable it is for white people to talk race.
No, seriously.
Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas traveled all over America to find white people to talk to about “what it means to be young and white.” One of the lines in the teaser makes it very clear: “Many white people feel uncomfortable talking about race.”
Cue the young white people saying things like “If you say the wrong thing then suddenly you are a racist” or “If I bring up any sort of race issue with my parents, they immediately assume that I’m demonizing them.”
And towards the end, they acknowledge out loud that this is “very uncomfortable” territory they’re getting into.
Here’s how MTV President Stephen Friedman explained the goal of the documentary:
“Whiteness often remains unexamined in conversations about race in this country, even as it acts as the implicit norm against which other racial identities are judged. By shining a spotlight on whiteness, we hope ‘White People’ will serve as a powerful conversation starter that encourages our audience to address racial bias through honest, judgment-free dialogue.”
