Washington Examiner Editor Defends ‘Obama Disses White Guys’ Cover

A YouTube message from President Obama specifically encouraging minorities and women to vote this November made some waves as Republicans accused the Democrats of discrimination. Perhaps the harshest critics of the video, the April 27 Washington Examiner headline declared “Obama Disses White Guys.” Dylan Ratigan brought on the paper’s editor Mark Tapscott to defend the headline yesterday.

Tapscott, who defended the headline against the Washington Post‘s Jonathan Capehart, argued that it was the president who made the debate racial, and as such opened the door for attacks like the one in his paper. Capehart didn’t buy it, calling the headline hyperbole and suggesting that rallying the base that got you elected isn’t “racial politics,” just plain politics. But rather than indicate that he thought the headline went too far, he claimed it hit at “exactly what should be the issue,” and was proud of his paper for pointing out the president’s “mistake”: “he described a political appeal here in racial terms.”

Voting patterns for White males, 35+, seem to be set fairly solidly. Slight, but persistent advantage to the Republicans. This is like unto the solidified nature of voting patterns in Texas. Northeast and far West Texas, to the Pecos, are reliably Republican, as is Fort Worth and the Metroplex suburbs. When Dallas flipped to the Democrats a decade ago, and San Antonio, Austin, Laredo and the Valley remained reliably Democratic, the focus of all elections shifted to Houston and its suburbs. Houston proper has now shifted Democratic, and so the focus is the Houston suburbs. Texas politicians recognize that, and, indeed, Tollbooth Perry’s big fear is that he is running against a very popular former Houston mayor. What this ought to suggest is that President Obama is playing to the group that will influence the outcome of the next elections: African Americans, Hispanics, Women and Young Voters. Seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable allocation of resources ….

    Accurate headline.

    Accurate headline.

Oddly, I don’t feel in the least “dissed”. Then, again, I’m not into victimization.

  • Olby Sucks

That all depends who the “victimizer” is, right robert? Rhetorical question of course!

  • libra blue

What is the big deal? Obama has always been a “typical white person” racist.

Can you imagine the outrage if a white candidate had gone out and recruited white people to vote? I guess now that would be acceptable right?

  • The Real Royal King

Goodness, Libra Blue, what is it that the Republicans are doing corporately, through the RNC, in courting the Tea Partiers? They are recruiting White people. I haven’t hear anyone complaining about that. In fact, most Democrats have encouraged the Republicans to do just that.

  • The Real Royal King

I don’t know what a victimizer is, Jeff, so I am unable to answer your question.

  • writer

According to the King, since whites have never faced the ‘yoke of oppression’, it’s perfectly okay to insult and stereotype them. (Especially the ones living in the south.) Whites don’t deserve the same respect that all other races do.

BTW, King, when you use entire states such as West Virginia or Alabama to make your insults and stereotypes, you are aware that minorities also live in these states. You need to specify that you only mean to insult the white people living there. Otherwise, someone might mistake you for a bigot.

  • The Real Royal King

So, who said anything about swindlers, Jeff?

By the way, what is a bumber?

  • timzank

Ya know King, sooner or later you guys are gonna have to measure the effectiveness of your “everybody in the whole country that doesn’t do exactly as we tell them is a racist” meme.

It’s reached the point now in the public domain where people are starting to laugh off the instant ridiculous comparisons. That can’t be good for cases of real racism…

Much like the little boy who cried wolf. Seriously, you’ve waaaay overdone it.

You mean like the Dems do through ACORN?

  • oPad

Uhm…. waitaminute, Obama began by appealing to the “Young People”. Is the Washington Post is claiming that there are NO WHITE YOUNG PEOPLE???
And Obama is the racist here? Oh, ok – I get it.

    Please gimme a break….

  • Latin2

    Well what do you expect from the Obama;

He already has a PROVEN record of racist talk about white people.
