Four New York Times Journalists Are Missing In Libya

The New York Times has announced that four of its journalists are missing in Libya, where they were working, covering the conflict that has roiled the country. According to a post on the paper’s Media Decoder blog, editors in New York lost contact with the journalists on Tuesday, and have since received “second hand reports” that the reporting team “in the port city of Ajdabiya had been swept up by Libyan government forces.”

Bill Keller, the Times‘ executive editor, said the paper’s missing include Anthony Shadid, the Beirut bureau chief and twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize for foreign reporting; Stephen Farrell, a reporter and videographer who was kidnapped by the Taliban in 2009 and rescued by British commandos; and two photographers, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario, who have worked extensively in the Middle East and Africa:

“We have talked with officials of the Libyan government in Tripoli, and they tell us they are attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of our journalists,” Mr. Keller said. “We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed.”

Obama’s attitude of being non-commital and acting boldly certainly has its benefits. But, it has its flaws too. Libya was clearly not a situation of wait and see. We should have taken out airfields and carried out other steps to not allow Qaddafy to crush the rebellion. There is now a real possibility of him taking the major rebel stronghold of Benghazi. Bush was often guilty of acting too certain and uncompromising. Obama can be just the opposite as is the case here with our dithering, dilatory response to the Libyan rebellion. I’m very disappointed with Obama over the poor response to the crisis in Libya.

Did the NY Times reporters go to a tea party gathering in Libya? Because I know from the Times that a peaceful transition to Democracy is underway in Egypt, Libya, etc., but that violence is rampant at tea party events.
