‘Are You Sure You’re Watching CNN’? Christiane Amanpour Defends The Network Against Jon Stewart’s Ridicule
On Monday night, CNN international correspondent Christiane Amanpour paid a visit to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show — where she discussed current international stories such as the situation in Syria, as well as, yes, her network’s troubles. Stewart’s not been holding back in his mockery of CNN, but Amanpour said she’ll be betting on the network “winning.”
Commenting on the “humanitarian crisis unfolding before everybody’s eyes,” Stewart asked, “How are things at CNN?”
Amanpour replied that the network will be coming back “bigger and better” than before. “I want to bet, and I will be betting, on CNN winning,” she told Stewart. “I think everybody will.”
Citing the organization’s resources and infrastructure, Stewart went on to attribute his criticism to the fact that he cares. The pair then moved on to the topic of Syria — you know, the real humanitarian crisis — but the issue of CNN came up again later in the interview when Stewart spoke about his belief in the press’ power to have “a clarifying role.”
Amanpour agreed that we need good discussion about important issues in a way that doesn’t merely pit opposing talking points against each other. “Wizardry,” Stewart deemed it, as Amanpour again touted her employer.
“I urge you to keep watching CNN, and there is much more intelligent conversation going on,” she insisted.
“Tell me what time,” Stewart replied. “Because I do watch it. In between when and when?”
“From morning to night,” Amanpour told him.
“Are you sure you’re watching CNN?” Stewart quipped.
