Benjamin Netanyahu Gets Heckled During Congressional Speech, Handles It Like A Pro
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is speaking to a joint session of the United States Congress this morning, thus far delivering a generally convivial speech that has appealed to both Democrats and Republicans in touting U.S.-Israeli relations. After opening with a joke about Vice President Joe Biden and he no longer being the fresh faces on the hill, he followed with an earnest congratulations for capturing and killing Osama bin Laden. Just a few minutes into his speech, however, the Israeli leader was interrupted by protesting hecklers from the congressional balcony.
After the interruption, the House chamber was unsettled for a few minutes while security team removed the interrupting heckler. Noticing the awkward moment, Netanyahu strayed from his prepared text and said of the intrusion by saying “you can’t have real protests in the farcical parliaments of Tehran or Tripoli,” before adding “this is real democracy”
