Bill Clinton Dismisses Clinton Cash Author: ‘Threw It Out There to See If It’d Fly’

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, former President Bill Clinton defended his foundation’s controversial fundraising from accusations in Peter Schweizer’s Clinton Cash that he accepted foreign donations in exchange for potentially favorable treatment of donors while his wife Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State.

“There’s just no evidence,” Clinton said. “Even the guy that wrote the book apparently had to admit under questioning that he didn’t have a shred of evidence for this, he just sort of threw it out there and see if it’d fly. It won’t fly.”

Clinton may be referring to an interview with George Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton administration official, in Schweizer conceded he had no “smoking gun” that favors were traded for donations. Schweizer instead alleged a “pattern of behavior” like one found in insider trading investigations.

On the back of a scandal about her email server, the accusations have troubled Clinton’s 2016 campaign rollout; depending on which poll you believe, her trustworthiness has gone either up or down with the electorate.
