Scott Pelley, in keeping with recent coverage on CBS Evening News of President Trump‘s false claims and fights with the press, said on tonight’s newscast that “the president’s real troubles again today were not with the media, but with the facts.”
He fact-checked Trump’s claims about the Washington Post report that led to the resignation of Michael Flynn, along with statements the president made about Obamacare and border security.
Pelley spoke at the Texas Medal of Arts Awards in Austin this week and talked about the importance of good reporting under Trump:
“There is no democracy without journalism, and the quality of our democracy is tied directly to the quality of our journalism,” he said.
Recalling President Donald Trump’s comments last week labeling the media “the enemy of the American people,” Pelley speculated about how Trump might define his terms: “What is the media? It is the conversation of 300 million people who have the right to speak and have the right to be heard.”
He added, “I don’t think we should be reacting to the president. The president is the president and he can say what he wants to say. Our job is to continue to do our jobs the way we always have.”
