Charlie Rangel: After Lame Duck Successes, Obama Will Face No Primary Challenge In 2012
There’s been buzz about President Obama facing a potential challenger–or two–for the Democratic nomination in 2012. But Rep. Charlie Rangel (who knows a bit about losing friends and political influence) says the triple play of successes in the lame duck session of Congress mean you can forget Dems taking on one of their own.
“This is a different president after the lame duck,” Rangel told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. “He’s much stronger than we thought he was.”
While Rangel explicitly rules out a primary challenge in 2012, he dodged Matthews’ question about Hillary Clinton and 2016.
Watch the interview here, from MSNBC:
Matthews mentioned he and Rangel had been to lunch prior to the interview, and according to the New York Post‘s Page Six, the two dined at steak house Del Frisco’s in midtown Manhattan, ordering a “burger and a sandwich,” with Matthews picking up the tab.
