Chris Matthews on Hillary’s ‘Secretive’ Reputation: Well, FDR Was Too

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 9.41.17 PMWhile discussing the newly-released Benghazi-related emails of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews wondered whether her reputation for secretiveness will actually affect whether she’d make for a good president.

Among the most pertinent details from her emails: Clinton circulated information about the Benghazi attacks that contradicted the Obama White House’s initial narrative; she received concerns from now-deceased Ambassador Chris Stevens over the deteriorating situation in Libya; and that the former secretary forwarded emails from close friend Sidney Blumenthal about Libya without attribution.

New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt, who broke the email news on Thursday, told Matthews that the Blumenthal revelation demonstrates how Clinton was being fed information in “a way that’s just different than, I think, than most intelligence is supposed to move.” He added: Intelligence is vetted, there’s a whole system that was created after 9/11, to make sure that principals get stuff that all different parts of the government have looked at. This was different.”

Admitting that he fails to see “the nefarious aspect” of this story, Matthews concluded the segment with the following:

It seems to me there is something — Franklin Roosevelt, probably the best president we ever had, certainly in the 20th century, was very secretive and manipulative. And we still thought he was a good president. So if Hillary Clinton is secretive, we know that, is that going to help us get any further here?
