CNN’s Cuomo, Granderson Defend Media’s Ferguson Coverage: ‘We Don’t Create Monsters’
Responding to a tweeter who alleged that news outlets had contributed to tensions in Ferguson, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo defended the media at large, asking, “What happens when something goes wrong and there’s nobody there to shine a light on it? Do you think it usually increases the chances that the right thing happens?”
“We’re always talking about political correctness,” Cuomo added.* “It seems the media is one of the last places you can go and just bash all you want, all across the rage, and it’s still okay.”
CNN contributor L.Z. Granderson and Representative Karen Bass (D-CA) added that news outlets were essential for exposing injustices such as the Rodney King beating.
“We don’t create monsters,” Granderson said. “Our job is to show you the monster, and allow you, the public, to decide how you want to deal with that monster. Blaming us for exposing something is not going to solve that problem.”
* Cuomo also made an incisive point about not judging the “media” as a monolith, FWIW.
