Eric Cantor Calmly Accepts His Defeat: ‘I Couldn’t Be More Optimistic’
House Republican leader Eric Cantor spoke today about his big primary loss last night to Dave Brat and his decision to step down as House Majority Leader at the end of next month. Cantor opened by admitting he’s not happy about the setback, but explaining, “I couldn’t be more optimistic about the future of this country.”
Cantor praised his constituents, his supporters, and the Republicans he’s worked with in the House, touting major pieces of legislation the House GOP has pushed for to give struggling Americans some relief. Cantor declared that despite his loss, “I will be a champion for conservatives across the nation who are dedicated to preserving liberty and providing opportunity.” He also announced his support for Congressman Kevin McCarthy as his replacement in leadership.
Cantor also made a call for unity among Republicans to “put minor differences aside and help elect a Republican House and Senate.” He did not specifically mention his opponent, Dave Brat. In fact, Brat went unmentioned in the entirety of the press conference.
Cantor also took questions from the assembled reporters, dismissing speculation over why he lose and whether this loss “emboldens the tea party.” He repeatedly said he’d prefer to leave the political analysis to “y’all” in the room.
The election to fill Cantor’s slot in House GOP leadership will take place on June 19th.
