Fox News Dominates Ratings For State Of The Union, Republican Response

ratings

Cable news ratings, January 25, 2011:

•Fox News attracted huge numbers of viewers for its coverage of the State of the Union and the Republican Response, with nearly five million total viewers during the president’s speech, and 5.4 million in the next hour, which featured the Republican Response and reaction from Fox News. CNN was second on the night, with 2.9 million total viewers for the SOTU and over 3 million in the following hour. MSNBC trailed CNN by nearly half a million total viewers at 9 p.m. and by nearly 700,000 viewers at 10 p.m. Notably, MSNBC was the only news network to lose viewers between 9 and 10 o’clock.

•On a night when news viewership was up across the board, ratings for CNN’s Situation Room at 5 and 6 p.m. were conspicuously low, with the Wolf Blitzer-led show attracted less than 100,000 viewers in the critical 25-54 demographic in both hours.

No surprises here! First sight of msnbc’s commentary and people tune out!

  • Seeing 2012 From My Window

Wow I did NOT see that coming!

  • ImNotBlue

Wow, very interesting. The numbers went up (on all but MSNBC) when they carried the Republican response.

I think it would be foolish to read too much into that, but it is surprising to me.

Good catch. Though to be more precise, the response was only a few minutes and in the case of CNN, the ten o’clock hour was mostly Anderson Cooper with analysis and a highlight reel.*

*I guess because when they switched from Wolf to Coop, I turned-off the television because I had watched the speech(es) and don’t need to hear what anyone else has to say.

  • jrcmi

Interesting: Note that in the “total viewers” grid, Fox audience only increased by about half between O’Reilly and the SOTU but almost doubled between O’Donnell and the SOTU on MSNBC.

In the “25-54″ grid, Fox gained about 75 percent more viewers between the 8pm slot and the 9pm speech while MSNBC gained about 133 percent.

CNN boasted even better gains, percentage-wise, but the comparison isn’t equal since they broke from their standard format at 8pm.

Fox won the “big numbers” – but the small numbers are telling, too.

  • Liberty_Hound

So what’s new. FOX News always kicks ass on the ratings. I mean always.. The only threat FOX would ever face in a ratings war is if Comcast turns MSNBC to the right. I mean as bad as CNN is they bet MSNBC in prime time viewer.

  • ImNotBlue

    @ jr

What exactly do you think the percentages tell us? What is the value?

  • Hawk11

Here’s the interesting point not being said… FOX “fans” ejaculate to their ratings, believing that they are the big winners because the right wing are winning the ratings war in the news. In their eyes all the other left wing networks wallow behind them, right? Well, try taking into account that if FOX viewers who comment here see all the other news networks as “leftist” networks then the numbers you see above are quite ambiguous, aren’t they?

Let’s just add up Two numbers and see…

    Prime time (25 to 54)
    FOX – 1326
All the other “leftist” networks added up – 1633

    Prime time (Total viewers)
    FOX – 4331
All the other “leftist” networks added up – 4729

    Who really wins?

All it means is that the “leftist” viewers are divided in which “leftist” network they watch. The right only has one place to go.

  • Nacho

NBC brought in the biggest Green with 7.8 million.

FNC kick total ass in the non-Prime shows when you consider ShowBiz and grace aren’t political shows. But I would admit adverting for the FNC shows did drop a bit when Keith Obiteme left MSNBC. He advertized FNC constantly. And they still do pretty good on prime time.. Check the numbers when there isn’t a SOTUS going on. And if you are counting little HLN then you have count FOX Business which is chosen here.

  • rover37

MSNBC is sooooo scrwed.. Their prome time line up is dikemanchild maddow, crazyman unstable ogonnell, and the red head idiot who beats his wife…. CNN you;re about to be in 2nd place again still miles behind FOX

  • rover37

IF you look at nightly ratings FOX beats MSNBC,CNN, and HLN in every time slot combined from …and Red Eye at 3am almost beats CNN in prime time.

  • rocky road

Now that Olbermann is gone, Eugene Robinson and Howard Fineman, the MSNBC clown contributors are going to have to find a part time gig to pay the bills.

Isn’t funny how lefty loons here try to spin the Fox News win into some kind of loss?

    Gordo,
Are you calling me a loon? Thank you. I mean the last time I commented on something you wrote my comment was deleted for calling you an old bastard. Love the double standard here.

Here’s how it is you putz… I merely stated that you FOX news obsessed, intransigent fools have but one place to go. That one place to go is known as the most likely to misinform it’s audience. That is just fact, jackass. With that, when you add up the numbers of all the left wing “loon” news outlets and add up all the numbers of people watching them, then I believe it beats Full Of Xenophobes News. It may beat, be tied, or even be a little below. It just simply states (simply for people like you draft deferment boy) that we on the left like to have choices while you on the right are happy with one choice. No change whatsoever, doing nothing different, the republican mantra.

You’re still not getting my real name FOXnut.

  • Ninja

Your argument is that only lefties watch other networks and each and every conservative and republican only watches fox? I would say the adjective of loon fits quite nicely.

What’s funny is the FoxNews Fanatics perceiving these ‘cable news channel’ ratings each week as victories for your “team.”

What exactly do ‘you people’ get out of it? What does it validate for you? I am honestly curious and would very much appreciate a explanation. Thank you in advance for helping me understand.

Of course we won’t get your real name. That would open you to ridicule in your home town. All lying cowards hide behind phony names like Hawk. I sure believe a fool calling himself Hawk. LOL

Blue Ribbon Award for the “DUMBEST” spin ever put on a ratings
    column on Mediaite.

Even MSNBC, CNN, and HN management have got to be laughing at that one!

    You lost. LOL

  • shortstopk

I hope soon we can stop hearing about the “mainstream media” as if it doesn’t include Fox.

  • Seeing 2012 From My Window

“mainstream media” means the liberal media and does not include FOX.

  • Harry Flashman

It’s really no mystery why viewers overwhelmingly watched Fox for the speech and the rebuttal.

MSNBC’s anchors were disgraceful embarrassments to the profession the night of the November elections and the people watching haven’t forgotten. Why subject themselves to that group of snickering clowns again?

MSNBC is sneering their way into oblivion.

  • Bad Wolf

I prefer to consider the number of folks who did NOT tune in Fox.
And, the 3 major networks also carried the SOTU address.
I imagine individually, each one attracted more viewers than Fox.

Fox maybe the big fish in the cable pond, but when you swim in the ocean, they are small fry.

I thought independents and moderates were the new majority. And aren’t we always being told that FNC is appeals only to right-wingers?

So wouldn’t the totals for CNN and MSNBC include lefties and moderates, yet they barely exceed the number of FNC viewers in total?

Actually this is one of the few annual events where the broadcast network numbers probably ought to be included in the analysis. Even then… just because the TV sets were tuned to the SOTU, how many minds were tuned out? How many had the sound muted? (mine was) And what percentage of TVs were tuned to anything but the SOTU?
