Fox’s Kirsten Powers: GOP Benefits From Death Of Birther Meme
With one very loud exception, finding someone who deems the release of President Obama’s long-form birth certificate a proud moment in American history is near impossible. But while many merely note how unproductive the “birther” issue has been, some Democrats are just sad to see an easy target go. As Fox News Democratic analyst Kirsten Powers explained tonight, all Republicans have wanted was “for this to go away.”
Powers was on Fox Business’ Freedom Watch tonight to discuss the potential winners and losers of the final chapter in the birther diaries, which, like many, host Judge Andrew Napolitano was glad to see dissipate. Asked whether she believed there was a silver lining, Powers replied that she saw “nothing good come of it” and that the entire deal, particularly Donald Trump‘s involvement in the issue, was a “low point” in American politics. But beyond the potential disgrace of the matter, Powers was “kind of disappointed” that the President put the issue to rest. “Politically, it was damaging to Republicans,” she noted, as it made Republicans look crazy and reports were circulating that Republican strategists wanted nothing but “for this to go away.”
Napolitano persisted, however, to push Powers on Trump– namely, his high polling numbers and name recognition. Powers ceded the name recognition point but then noted that his appeal to middle Americans in red states is severely questionable: “what do you think they’re going to do with him in Iowa?”
