John Oliver’s New HBO Show Gets a Title and Premiere Date

HBO just made it official. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will premiere Sunday, April 27th at 11pm ET. John Oliver, who served for seven years as a correspondent for The Daily Show before he filled in for Jon Stewart as host last summer, will host the weekly, half-hour show on HBO.
Tim Carvell, who recently served as head-writer for The Daily Show, will join Oliver as showrunner for the new series. He will be joined by executive producers James Taylor and Jon Thoday as well as producer Liz Stanton.
Oliver’s new show should get a healthy lead-in from the fourth season of Game of Thrones, which will premiere at 9pm ET on April 6th. That show will be followed in the schedule by the third season of Veep at 10pm and the new Mike Judge-created series Silicon Valley at 10:30pm.
When HBO first announced the project last November, Oliver said, “I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now.” He added, “I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”
