Jon Stewart Grades CNN’s Republican Debate: ‘World’s Most Patriotic Game Show’
Last night’s Republican primary debate on CNN scored in the ratings but both candidates and organizers alike received criticism for organization and quality of answers. Tonight, Jon Stewart weighed in on debate’s overuse of technology, the weirdest answers, and winners and losers of the debate.
Repeatedly targeting CNN for their obsession with Twitter– including John King‘s excited announcement that the debate was a trending topic– Stewart highlighted the attempts to add questions from Twitter into the mix. Paramount among them was a bizarre moment where King told viewers to take a picture of a picture on the screen to unlock secret behind the scenes footage of the debate, footage that Stewart described as not good enough for CNN’s 24/7 “lazy Susan of stupid sh*t.”
Stewart then went at the candidates, going easiest on Rep. Michele Bachmann, only making a joke about the difficulty of running a home with 28 children in it. Mitt Romney received a requisite hair joke (“wearing an only-my-sideburns-saw-a-ghost hairdo”), while Tim Pawlenty‘s equivocation at going after Romney on health care was also chided. But by far the hardest hit candidate was Rep. Ron Paul, whose lengthy, roundabout answer on children in emergency rooms garnered him his own punchline. “Sorry Ron Paul, the correct answer is ‘yes. Yes, five-year-olds get emergency medical treatment,’” Stewart quipped.
