Keith Olbermann: Anti-Gay Hatred Evident In DADT Repeal Opposition
On Countdown last night, Keith Olbermann had on author Dan Savage to discuss the opposition to the imminent repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the current policy that does not allow for openly gay members of the military. In opening the segment, Olbermann highlighted some of the most vocal (and insane?) opponents of the repeal of DADT portraying them as homophobic. And he’s absolutely right.
To be fair, not every opponent of the repeal of DADT is a homophobe, intolerant or anti-gay. But, the prevailing rhetoric of the opposition is largely rooted in status quo thinking, and fear that gays in the military will harm our defenses and aid our enemy. So, while not technically homophobic, its pretty damn close.
This is an opinion piece. The views expressed in this article are those of just the author.
