MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Apologizes To RNC’s Michael Steele For ‘Master’ Comment

video

Tonight on The Last Word, Lawrence O’Donnell turned to an interesting subject for his “Rewrite” segment – himself. The reason: O’Donnell’s introduction to his interview with Michael Steele last night. Both O’Donnell and Steele enjoyed the interview itself (as did we), but Steele took exception to one part of the introduction (which was filmed after the interview). Upon further reflection, so did O’Donnell.

In that intro, O’Donnell referred to the Republican National Committee as Steele’s “master,” the potential unfortunate implications of which should be obvious. Steele called O’Donnell about it today and left a (calm, measured) voicemail which clearly got the point across – O’Donnell played the message on the show and offered a genuine, sincere apology, and relayed Steele’s assurance that he will be back on The Last Word in the future. Compelling TV, and as always, nice to see adults work out differences like…adults. Video of the segment below.

Good for you , Larry , and especially good to hear you say tea partiers , instead of the other .

  • jk76

I don’t see a problem with it. Are people going to tippy-toe about what words are strung together forever? It didn’t mean anything. Would ‘boss’ have been ok? it means the same thing…let me crack open my thesaurus so I can talk.

I have more of a problem of O’Donnell’s characterization of Demint’s statement, when Demint said “I would have given the same answer [should not teach in public schools] when asked if a single woman, who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend, should be hired to teach my third grade children, I just think the moral decisions are different with a teacher.

There’s more qualifiers than what i’ve seen on MSNBC today. You can still disagree with it, but atleast get it right and try to understand it. Along with the clarification that he stated is his personal opinion and it’s a local issue.

This show is going to be a force to be reckoned with, I tells ya.

It will be MSNBC’s The Factor, only w/o trivia contests and body language crap.

  • Newsjunky

Wow. Says a lot for both gentlemen. Mr. Steele did not have to accept that apology, but he did. And Mr. O’Donnell did not have to apologize on-air and so sincerely. But, he did. Good for you both.

  • Rogue-Comic

I saw this segment and was impressed by O’Donnell’s mea culpa. He may lean left to me, but I see him fast becoming the most respected among the pundit show anchors on MSNBC.

You couldn’t just apologize and let it go, could you Lawrence.

You admitted your poor choice of words and then stuck in a bunch of your personal political ‘junk’ (again) before your last sentence restatement.

This, Larry boy, means your apology was done for the benefit of YOU, not for Michael Steele. You hurt Michael Steele, but you apologized to benefit YOU! That in my mind, puts you in the class of people who APOLOGIZE FOR GETTING CAUGHT, not for doing something wrong.

Sadly, I thought you might add a touch of class to Olbermann & Maddow, something which would be easy to do. Instead you crept UNDER Keith Olbermann’s bar & made yourself look shallow and pathetic.

  • TonyClifton

MSNBC will probably fire him for apologizing. Olbermann will demand it so.

    Yes!

Common decency towards those you may disagree with will not be tolerated under the Olbermann regime, but I do foresee a second establishment Olbermann will be banned from when Comcast takes the reigns.

  • Arkansas Steve

Lawrence, the reason to apologize is to:
    (1) acknowledge what you did wrong
    (2) acknowledge that you caused someone pain
    (3) say you are sorry

The purpose of YOUR apology was to:
    (1) re-explain what you were trying to do
    (2) say you unintentionally did it wrong (we all make mistakes, don’t we)
    (3) re-state all your controversial political opinions which have nothing to do with the apology (last word freak)
    (4) look like a ‘gracious’ person
    (5) minimize your culpability
    (6) FINALLY APOLOGIZE!

    Notice any difference Lawrence?

    You even fooled Eddie.

This apology was appropriate and well done. It shows why being politically correct is both the decent and polite way to behave in civil society. More people should follow this example.

  • murf

Expect a lot more of these loaded apologies.

IMO , I think Crazy Larry has tarnished his image with his past tirades and bigoted comments and won’t attract a lot of new viewers. I also think that a lot of the MSNBC drones like the HuffPo & Daily Kos crowd will tune out his show when dissenting voices are on . Those folks hate with a passion conservatives.

TonyClifton & Rogue-Comic: Olbermann has apologized MANY times for past comments that were insensitive. He never pulled the BS about “those who may have been offended“… he straight up says it. He probably doesn’t do it as much as he should, but he has done it, regardless. So, don’t spout all this petty sarcasm as if he’s against apologies, or something. People like you know the truth (or just blindly ignorant to them), but have to take a baseless cheap shot anyway. Good for you and your 5 min of fame.

  • RazorsEdge

Kudos to Mr. O’Donnell. Regardless of ideology, you don’t see that self-diagnosis very often (or that quickly). I thought O’Donnell was sincere. Sincerity or not, O’Donnell could have easily have ignored or refuted Steele’s request. But he didn’t

Right… because Fox News viewers just love a liberal point of view, don’t they? Please.

By the way, your theory about regular viewers of the show tuning out when dissenting views are on is baseless, because Ed Schultz constantly brings on far-right points of view and argues with them, and his viewers keep coming back, and his viewers have improved with each month. Try and stick with facts next time.

Olbermann did give a nice apology to Scott Brown. He even did it over two nights. Added a few words as well on the second night. What a guy!

Your brain is so dumb. Steve, Arkansas Steve, Lawrence does not have to obey your standard of apology. He can say he is sorry however he wants, and Mr. Steele accepted his apology as it was.

Armwood, you write very well. But either you’ve never hurt anyone or never learned how to apologize so that the OFFENDED person feels better. Any apology is better than none, but like most things in life, there are better & best ways to do them. Lawrence is smooth. He is experienced. He is crafty. He is also smart enough to understand that if he issues a timely, somewhat self deprecating apology, HE WILL LOOK GOOD.

Let’s face it. We’re not talking much about Michael Steele, are we? We’re all talking about LARRY’S BIG-DEAL APOLOGY! Isn’t he a great man to apologize? Isn’t he nice? Isn’t this all about Larry?

Yes, Olbermann may tell Jon Stewart he may go overboard from time to time, but I charge you to present evidence to where he *directly* apologized to Scott Brown on the air. Footage or print of mea culpas to certain female ESPN ex-co-workers will count for bonus points.

Watching the Lib media the past month is like seeing them jump off of buildings, metaphorically speaking. It is wonderful to see, because they shoved this Obama guy on us without a shred of scrutiny. If his ship sinks (and it is), they they go with it. What you’re seeing from Sanchez, Olbermann, Schultz, Matthews, and this clown is a manifestation of that realization.

What the hell has happened to msNBC??? Whoever is running that asylum is ruining it.into the ground. If one of the talking heads @ msNBC numbers goes up 25,000 during this time prior to the Nov. 2 election they need to look at the corresponding hour’s numbers on FOX. They’ve gone up 100,000 to 1,000,000. Chris Tingle and Angry Ed have it the easiest as they don’t have the strength of FOX to go up against. I bet Keith wishes his show was on 2 hours earlier. He’ll never get close to O’Reilly, who has 3 1/2 times Keith’s numbers.

“BECK: What is he? [...] I’ve talked about this at length, and so I’m going to rehash it all. I’ve already said stupid comment, off the top of head. And I said just the other day, an ignorant comment. Now that I really understand how he grew up, where he grew up, what his influences were — it’s more of a liberation theology, a kind of attitude he has. That I immediately interpreted — because I didn’t understand him. His attitude is more of, like Bill Ayers — that America is an oppressor. And I just disagree with that.”

Well, you have set up a false premise. Again. Haven’t you? We Americans have a legacy of racism, and it does creep into our thoughts, our language, often surprising us. Go to a cocktail party in Texas or the South and sense the anxiety when the topic shifts to Brazil nuts, or to a 4th of July party when the fireworks are set off and somehow describes one of the novelties with a term from childhood. The difference is a moderate, progressive or liberal feels badly about it and apologizes. A conservative thinks he or she is witty and has made an important statement about reverse discrimination.

Take for example your little ditty this morning:

(The writing is juvenile and simplistic, so I hope you’re not offended if I try to clean it up.)

It’s funny how easily these types of racist comments slip so easily from the mouths of liberals and how quick they are to point fingers at conservatives {presumably, you mean when they, the Conservatives, including you and Michelle-in-Utah and her various other names, and Nutso, and Murf and Righter and others spout racism, as you they so often do}. And how easily they {presumably, the dreaded liberals} are excused {presumably, when they apologize and ask to be forgiven, and by other liberals, only}, while Conservatives {while never apologizing nor asking for forgiveness} are forever to be damned and labeled racist {by liberals awaiting such an apology and plea for forgiveness}.

    Is that about right?

You do see the irony, don’t you? You, Michelle-in-Utah and her various other names and personae, Nutso, Murf, Righter and others have yet to apologize or ask for forgiveness for any of your frequent racial tirades and epithets. Indeed, you giggle, smirk, strut like some Cracker teenage boys on Friday night every time you render such tirades and epithets and then cloak yourselves in the self-righteousness of reverse discrimination.

We need to thank both Mr. O’Donnell and Mr. Steele for the learning opportunity they have provided us. Of course, some of us obviously learned nothing. More is the pity.

If you think people are being offended ‘because’ of their color, race, religion or sexual orientation (it’s not a preference for most), then you just don’t get it.

The only reason Steele mentioned it was because O’Donnell NEVER would have said it in the context of Barack Obama (or any other Democrat). Its all about posturing and seeking poltical advantage by playing the ethnic card. And it simply has to STOP!

Yeah, people! Stop getting genuinely offended like Michael Steele because Paula’s sick of it!

What does this have to do with anything? You seem to like flinging your demographic information around, like you think it gives you some extra ethos or credibility. You kept mentioning how you were ‘bisexual’ when we were discussing gay rights (I still don’t believe that you live in the Village, by the way. No one so disgusted by gay men would even think about living anywhere near Chelsea or the Village). You also mentioned that you were a lawyer. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that a lawyer would use a lingerie shot as their avatar. But I digress.

I guess, in conclusion, I’m sorry you get so offended when other people genuinely get offended for being treated insensitively in regards to their race and the history of that race being enslaved to another not even two centuries ago.

I wanted to apologize for calling Senator-elect Scott Brown an “irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, tea bagging, supporter of violence against women and against politicians with whom he disagrees.” I’m sorry, I left out the word “sexist.”

What has impressed me is the example of civility that both men have shown all of us. Politics is becoming dirtier than a sewer and most Americans really aren’t comfortable with that sort of behavior. So it was so refreshing to see Mr. O’Donnell acknowledge that he could have chosen a word with less history attached to it to describe Michael Steele’s work relationshiip and it was just a wonderful to see Mr. Steele behave in the same kind manner while they worked to resolve a tiff.

They would make a great pair on a single talk show because their political opinions are so different and yet they are gentlemen and possibly might assist others in the public eye to see that bright, intelligent people can make poor – not awful – chocies of words and rethink their statements and show us all what “taking responsibility” really means.

My hat is off to both men.

sorry for the type. I mean to say, “… and it was just AS wonderful…”

Get over it Mr. Steele. One of these days people with darker skin are simply going to have to get over it! Being a SLAVE to one’s EMPLOYER is DIFFERENT than being Private Property. Even if O’Donnell was being racist, Stand Up and be a HUMAN.

So you were descended from someone held in slavery? We were all descended from Apes. Does that mean we should all get our feelings hurt if we’re told to “Stop monkeying around?”

There is only 1, yes ONE Race. The Human Race. Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Negro, Caucasian, etc are not Subdivisions of the Human Species, they are descriptions of Homo Sapiens from different regions.

Your Skin tone means jack shit. Nothing. Will some people disagree with me? Sure. Can you get your feelings hurt when they do? Be my guest, but those who fail to learn ‘Sticks & Stones’ are just as guilty as those who fail to learn “Don’t judge a book’.

RRK – This is the last time I will respond. You are no better than Dhuran Ravi or Lori Drew. You are a bully. You are a nasty, lying bully. You just better hope that you do not find yourself in a situation one day where you create your own Tyler Clementi or Megan Meier. You are no different than Dhuran Ravi or Lori Drew – I hope you are proud of yourself.

The Internet provides the perfect forum for cyberbullies, individuals whose aim is to gain gratification from the distress caused by provoking and tormenting others.

Serial bullies harbour a lot of internal aggression which they direct at others. This may include projection, false criticism and patronising sarcasm whilst contributing nothing of any value.

Most serial bullies are also serial attention-seekers. More than anything else they want attention. It doesn’t matter what type of attention they get, positive or negative, as long as they can provoke someone into paying them attention. It’s like a 2-year-old child throwing a tantrum to get attention from a parent. The best way to treat bullies is to refuse to respond and to refuse to engage them – which they really hate.

In other words, do not reply to their postings, and on forums carry on posting without reference to their postings as if they didn’t exist. In other words, treat nobodies as nobodies. The anger of a serial bully is especially apparent when they come across someone who can see through them to espy the weak, inadequate, immature, dysfunctional aggressive individual behind the mask.

The objectives of bullies are Power, Control, Domination, Subjugation. They get a kick out of seeing you react. It doesn’t matter how you react, the fact they’ve successful provoked a reaction is, to the bully, a sign that their attempt at control have been successful. After that, it’s a question of wearing you down. The more your try to explain, negotiate, conciliate, etc the more gratification they obtain from your increasingly desperate attempts to communicate with them.

Understand that it is not possible to communicate in a mature adult manner with a disordered individual who’s emotionally retarded.

The Number One rule for dealing with this type of behaviour is: don’t respond and don’t engage. This is not as easy to do as it sounds. It’s a natural response to want to defend yourself, and to put the person right.

However, never argue with a serial bully; it’s not a mature adult discussion, but like dealing with a child or immature teenager; whilst the serial bully may be an adult on the outside, on the inside they are like a child who’s never grown up – and probably never will.

Decide if you want to take action, and if so, prepare carefully and strike hard. Sometimes refusing to respond and engage will result in the cyberbully losing interest and going off to find someone easier to torment.

Sometimes though, especially if there has been interaction in the past, the cyberbully is so obsessed that s/he cannot and will not let go. You will have to make that person let go, but only through swift, hard, legal action, and only when the time is right.

King, would you kindly quote some of my ‘racial tirades’? I’ve said I believe Louis Farrakhan and Rev. Wright are racists. I’ve said I went to inner city schools containing members of the Crips and Black Gangster Disciples and that they weren’t very nice people. (The Gangland and Lockdown TV shows say the same things. Are they having delusions of being ‘chased’ by African-Americans?) You constantly mock and deride white people (trailer trash, they all eat Cheetos and drink Big Gulps) yet you never see yourself as being racist or hateful or hypocritical. But I guess that’s to be expected. Psychopaths don’t have consciences.

I doubt it. The Last Word has been the number one show on the network a few times. If Olbermann and Maddow haven’t been cancelled by now (and they won’t be), I don’t see how O’Donnell will be, especially if the show doesn’t cost much to produce.

It is really fun to be called out as racists by the folks who believe blacks can only prosper with white liberal help and that any black who doesn’t subscribe to this monolithic simplistic view of blacks is an Uncle Tom.

The folks who gave us The Great Society which made black fathers extraneous, created multi generation dependency, made illegitimacy the rule instead of exception, turned formerly prosperous and safe “Bronze Towns all over urban America into little Beiruts, more than anything delivered knockout blows to real black pride, replacing it with a sense of permanent grievance, all the while transferring assets equally the total of the Fortune 500 into poverty programs whose only goal today is to self perpetuate, those folks who see blacks as their feeble wards are telling conservatives that we are the real racists.

    Truly priceless!

I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more profuse apology. O’Donnell’s liberal cred is intact. Power to the people. Cum ba yah, my Lord, cum ba ya. Oh lord, cum ba ya.
