Obama Chides John McCain After Testy Exchange: “The Election Is Over”

video

Good government doesn’t necessarily mean compelling television. The White House “Health Care Summit” currently on all cable news programs was proving to be more soporific than electric. Solid reasonable debate was dangerously devolving to sophistry, evidenced by Senator John McCain‘s very critical take on all of the mistakes he felt that the Obama administration has made in an effort to reform health care. President Obama wasn’t having it, however, and chastised McCain’s critique by reminding him that “the election is over.” Snap!

If the election is over why is obama still campaigning?

  • Christine

Snap? Mature. Obama has yet to stop campaigning so he can’t chastise anyone about talking points. Apparently legitimate criticism = talking points according to Obama. Waste of friggin time.

  • http://www.sailrabbits.com Magister

In case anyone who doesn’t have access to a television is interested, the summit is streaming via whitehouse.gov/live and I’ve got the little pop-up going from c-span.org.

Great theater and there’s a couple of decent liveblogs going.

Next: “Obama needs to stop campaigning.”
Next: “Why is Obama still campaigning?”
Next: “Is Obama still campaigning? We report you decide.”

Who issued this talking point? It’s everywhere. LOL
Try to vary them a little so it’s less obvious, K?

  • The Real Royal King

The McCain frame of mind reminds me of Wright after the Supreme Court appointed him president. Rove’s advice was to act as if he had won the popular vote overwhelmingly, despite the fact he lost it. Of late, McCain has been acting as if he had won overwhelmingly instead of losing convincingly.

I find the situation with McCain sad. Despite a terrible, crippling temper, I have also had respect for him. Of late, he is acting erratic, spiteful, petty. The primary race against that xenophobic Tea Partier must have him down.

Speaking of primaries (and off topic), I understand that in the Texas primary election, next Tuesday, the Democratic nomination is wrapped up in favor of Bill White, the very popular former mayor of Houston, and that in early voting in Travis County (one of the counties in which Austin is located), 1/3rd of the voters in the Republican primary voted in the Democratic primary in 2008. Apparently, there is something of a movement afoot to force a run-off between Toll Booth Perry and the Breck Girl. The Tea Party candidate imploded during the last couple of weeks with her 9/11 conspiracy theories and some xenophobic comments, but may still poll enough to deny Toll Booth the requisite votes.

What this proves is all the talk and promises of the campaign were just that, talk, and there was never any intention of following through. It shows that campaign promises mean nothing and your vote should not be based on them.

This entire process has shown that promises of change in Washington and greater bi-partisanship were just lip service to vulnerable voters who sought something different than what we have had for decades in DC.What they got was someone really good at fooling them and who had no more intention of changing things than any of those who came before.

McCain is right about the deal making. It doesn’t matter that it’s been done before or is part of the system,it’s still wrong and corrupt.Obama’s response shows he accepts all of that which means no change.

  • Olby Sucks

I read a poll yesterday that said that 50% of the mexicans in texas call themselves conservatives. Did you have a point, faux?

  • PureFreedom

Why are they still meeting on Health Care????
We have a country that needs jobs and a fix in the housing market and the economy.

9 out of 10 people like there health care …. why are they meeting and wasting time on this?
There is a small few that need it? Yes, Then set up a government plan within the government just for that few and leave the rest of us alone.

Move on to stop spending money!

  • http://www.sailrabbits.com Magister

Carrie Budoff Brown from Politico is on the C-SPAN call-in show. Somewhere early in her bit, she predicted that the “election is over” would be one of the soundbites to come out of the summit and considering that it had already been posted across every website, I’d say that she “predicted” too late.

People keep asking why Obama won’t stop campaigning b/c he won’t stop campaigning. It’s obvious b/c Obama isn’t exactly a subtle man. The truth hurts….then it’s labeled a talking point.

I’m not sure was prudent for Pres. Obama to call the Senate Hcare bill a prop. It’s proposed legislation. Included in that legislation were ‘deals’ to FL Medicare Advantage to remain, LA state Medicaid provision special to LA, cadillac tax deferral etc.

Pres. Obama’s 11 page document uses much of the Senate Bill as its bedrock. Including the aforementioned deals. So I thought McCain was within reason to bring up at the summit. Why get ‘testy’ about actual proposed legislation? Because you don’t want to speak about it? It’s counter-productive?

It’s proposed legislation, embrace the legislation that you’re supporting. To me it’s a weird testy reaction towards McCain on something McCain brings up that Pres. Obama Supports

I loved the moment when Harry Reid mentioned that the “Nuclear Option” is always brought up by the Republicans and that he had never mentioned using that himself — you know, unless you go back to his comments from this same week.

My favorite part about today is every time a Repub reads directly from the Dem bill, they try to shut them down. No need to let the facts get in the way of the debate.

  • Cubby

I really am shocked at how liberally (if you’ll excuse the term) the so-called “fair and balanced” dayside anchors at Fox News are throwing around Republican talking points in lieu of “analysis”. Good lord, it’s shameless!

  • Cubby

Of course let’s be honest, if Olbermann and/or Maddow had been allowed to provide “analysis” today, the right would have the same complaints. But I am watching Megyn Kelly right now and am literally shocked at how blatant her Republican cheerleading is.

  • libra blue

Obama is so full of BS! He is always campaigning.

  • The Real Royal King

Well, Megyn Kelly might as well get her check directly from the RNC. She may well be less of an objective reporter than Keith Olbermann, and she hold herself out to be a journalist. She is simply terrible. A terrible tool.

You wanna hit us up with some examples… or just speak in broad generalities so the blue-loons can chime in with agreements, but remain unburdened with actual evidence or examples?

  • The Real Royal King

INB, that shtick works well over at the Klub, but most of us, including you, come here with a certain base of common knowledge. You know very well it’s true. You might elect not to object to it. That’s perfectly fine, but let’s live the wink-wink, nod-nod shtick to people lie Blackthong and Johnny-Jeff, in the proper place and context.

  • Cubby

Honestly, if you can’t watch Megyn Kelly’s “analysis” for more than five minutes and agree that she’s parroting talking points, you’re lying to yourself. As I said, Olbermann/Maddow would be doing the same thing – but Fox has been holding Kelly and her colleagues up as examples of “fair and balanced” “hard news” reporters. Her obsession with the misdirection of “tort reform” shows she’s reading straight from the playbook, not to mention her treatment of Debbie Wasserman Shultz. I could go on, but really all you have to do is turn on Fox.

  • Olby Sucks

That “shtick” just kicked your ass, faux royal king. That’s twice today, that I’ve seen, you’ve made accusations you can’t back. ;)

Please, Jeff, I’m content to let you be a legend in your own mind. Some day, far off, we all hope, you’ll likely turn a little pail then kick the bucket. Until then, you are and shall remain kickless. Cubby’s point in his 15:10 Hours post is exactly on-point and very well stated. Just say that you agree with Ms. Kelly’s position, her ideology, but let’s not play that silly game here. It’s tedious and tiresome for everyone not a Klub member. I might add that were you a person schooled in nuance, your ridiculous claim might work for someone like Harris Faulkner, who doesn’t wear her ideological leanings on her sleeve and doesn’t seem to be interested in pushing anything other than the news. That doesn’t work with Ms. Kelly, however. She is blantant, if not a bit clumsy in her tailoring the news to fit her ideology. Again, if you want to hurl poop in your peculiar underhand, fast-pitch softball style, fine. The Klub members all enjoy that. Here, not so much.

    Where?

but most of us, including you, come here with a certain base of common knowledge.

Yeah, and apparently, to you “common knowledge” means the ability to say whatever you want, without having to back it up. That’s not “common knowledge,” that’s called making baseless assumptions.

You know very well it’s true.

Yes, what I just said is true.

You might elect not to object to it. That’s perfectly fine, but let’s live the wink-wink, nod-nod shtick to people lie Blackthong and Johnny-Jeff, in the proper place and context.

Isn’t that what you’re doing right now? You approve of a claim that FNC isn’t providing fair coverage, but provide have no evidence. Isn’t that the “wink-wink, nod-nod” you’re talking about… you’ll just assume Cubby is correct.

I know, I know… I always get myself in trouble for asking for people to back up their claims with evidence. I know that goes against your credo of, “If I believe it to be true, it must be true,” but I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. Just as I proved your, “left-wingers aren’t terrorists” theory to be BS last week, I’ll just keep on doing it as long as you’re intent on making goofy unsubstantiated statements. Tough.

I think, like Royal, you’re just assuming things… or taking the angry rants from the committed anti-FOX-ers (Media Matters, KOS, etc. all who have a vested and monetary interest in slandering FNC), as gospel. • Grammie

Tina, you might be right except for one tale of woe by Louise Slaughter D-NY? among many other less gripping and dramatic stories.

It seems she has a constituent who is so poor and with no insurance has been reduced to using her deceased sister’s dentures that really don’t fit all that well. Not only was it gripping but it that alone should be enough to solve the whole problem however dear Louise desires. After all, she won the DEM Cry Fest Derby!

I swear, she actually related this story b/c I guess she assumes it is worthy of national airtime being followed slavishly by much of the media.

I feel kind of bad though b/c her story didn’t have the desired effect on me. I immediately thought of Eliza Dolittle and her dead Aunt’s straw hat. She was convinced that “those she done lived with done her in” to get that hat. Maybe sisterly love fell short in this case and “she done her in” for her dentures.

If my reaction offends anyone that’s fine with me. A serious reaction to that kind of circus is not in me to give.

  • The Real Royal King

Stop the stupid name games, Oma Janet, and try to focus, to remain on topic. I’m sure that every good and decent, God-fearing Amerikan was repulsed by your nasty little story. Maybe I simply wasn’t wasn’t raised properly, but I was also taught that charity and compassion were positive qualities.

What is so funny about an elderly woman too destitute to afford dental care? Perhaps, it doesn’t rise to the level of national tragedy, but it gives us some understanding of the very real problem so many Americans are facing. Why is it you feel comfortable sneering at her plight? If you can’t summon up some empathy, some compassion, can you at least fake a little pity for her? Are you that cold? That uncaring?

I would like an objective, honest debate about health care, free of anecdotal evidence. Would any of the media cover that? I seriously doubt it. Last summer we endured hours of summoned anger and manufactured anecdotal evidence, by way of the Tea Partiers, about how any reform would kill us all. That got coverage. Is it indecent to use real life stories about real Americans whose quality of life had been seriously eroded to underscore the need for reform? Would that we need have to do it, but alas, in a media culture obsessed with goofy people in crazy hats screaming as loud as they can, what else is available? And, it least there is some demonstrable truth to this woman’s story.

I’m sorry, I just fail to understand how anyone can be so mean.

Cubby, I’ll break this down nice and simple for you: You made a claim against FOX. I asked you to prove it, or at least provide some basis for what you were talking about. Apparently, that was too much to ask, and I should have simply accepted what you had to say as fact. Apparently, it’s rude of me to ask for more information, for some sort of substantive criticism, not just vague generalities. But you know what… I don’t think so.

If you want to have a good discussion, let’s do it. If you want to throw out baseless comments, and then get angry when someone disagrees or asks you to back up your opinions… then continue to get mad, and stomp your feet when someone like me disagrees.
