Olivia Munn “Tries Out” As Daily Show Correspondent

Whoa! The Daily Show has another female correspondent! And — whoa! It’s Olivia Munn! And — whoa! She was awesome.

Munn, the fetching and fanboy-minting co-host of Attack of the Show on the G-4 network, debuted last night as the new “Senior Asian Correspondent,” reporting on the plight of Vietnamese fishermen in the Gulf (Munn is half-Chinese). She was comically joined on-screen by a very pregnant Samantha Bee in an implied torch-passing moment, followed by Jason Jones, Wyatt Cenac and Aasif Mandvi, showing that the Daily Show is probably the most diverse newscast on TV. And now they’ve got another woman which always helps make a show funnier and more awesome.

And Munn has the chops, too — her years on AOTS have shown that she’s far, far more than a ridiculously hot-bodied babe (though she certainly is that). She’s got great timing, fearlessness about subject matter and always brings a sense of fun. Last night, she more than held her own with her more experienced peers. Never mind bringing her own slavering horde of fanboys to the Daily Show demographic (in case they’re not there already). Expect this “try out” to become permanent very soon — if she decides she wants it.

Here’s the whole multi-culti Daily Show gang:

Olivia Munn is the only reason people watch G4.

Well that, Morgan Webb, and Ninja warrior…..and the Bond films… and the chance of Adam Sessler stapling himself in the crotch..and Cops….and….. :)

Now being a self professed geek this grinds my gears. Her, Morgan Webb, Megan Fox etc play off this geek image to reel in and make money off the nerds of the world. Plus her acting is stale as shit and she’s never been funny a minute of her life.

People watch G4? Really? I gave up on the network once TechTV was killed by them.

I gave up on G4 the day I graduated college. Great concept, bad execution.

What’s hilarious is there is still this perception about Munn — as exemplified by Sklar’s review or even Jelperman’s comment above– that she is still “all that” in geek circles. Yet that’s NOT true at all.

If you go to actual geek sites — for example, Aint It Cool News, which recently had a column talking about Munn being cast in an upcoming sitcom — what’s amazing to read from online message boards is how much geeks DON’T like her. For example, at that AICN press press release, the message board wasn’t filled with salivating geeks drooling all over Munn. In fact, it was the OPPOSITE and they were downright pretty brutal in their comments about her looks, talent, and just about everything else.

That’s because true geeks have since come to realize Munn was never truly one of them. They can now see the Emperor has no clothes and she doesn’t have a clue about movies or video games or whatever else gets real geeks excited. It’s just that G4 (and Munn herself) shrewdly honed her image for commercial purposes, to make it LOOK as if she was a geeky girl. However, since then, the Wizard of Oz curtain has been pulled aside and geeks now mock Munn.

So, to that end, Rachel Sklar needs to catch up with regards to the true heartbeat of online pop culture…
