Rachel Maddow Takes Viewers On a Field Trip To Tiny Town, USA

video

Rachel Maddow went on a bit of a deviation from her usual style on her program last night– she told a story set in Tiny Town, USA. In Tiny Town, a mean old man notices that two deliveries– one with bakery goods and one with pool chemicals– get mixed up, so that chlorine ends up being delivered to a donut shop. I won’t ruin the ending for you, but what you need to know is that this is some sort of metaphor for the current situation at Goldman Sachs.

Her explanation of the financial situation after ending the story stands on it’s own. It’s classic Maddow: clear, comprehensive, accurate and easy to follow. Even if her bias and exasperation with the right is apparent, the fact that it’s visible is precisely what makes it ignorable. Then there’s the Tiny Town parable, which is either an allusion to Aesop‘s fables or Glenn Becks chalkboard, or something in between. The relationship between the parable and the actual story is a little muddy, and probably serves more to confuse than elucidate, but it’s a sign that Maddow may possibly be expanding her repertoire to include oratory techniques mostly owned by the right.

Next, Rachel Maddow should do a show explaining what happens to jobs when all the businesses in Tiny Town are bankrupted by taxes and regulation. Maybe she could call the segment, “Cap and Trade Comes to Tiny Town.”

She knew it was bombing, you can tell, then she joked about too. :-) I hate to put it in these terms, but as my daughter would say, that was gay. :-)

My grandpa just sent me a story that her viewers need as they probably missed it when they were kids.

The Ant and the Grasshopper: The Modern Years

The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the antis a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.

CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green…’

ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, We shall overcome. Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshoppers sake.

President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper’s plight.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reidexclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the antto makehim pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The antis fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant’s old house,
crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn’t maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over
by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and once peaceful, neighborhood.

The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it.

She does act very smug and sophmoric/juvenile. Your daughter was right. Olbermann has the same personality. Gays and lesbians are notorious for their Peter Pan complex.

felixw, things were fine just before the S&L bailout and then congress started to take regulations AWAY. however, i do love your doom and gloom.

mark, peter pan complex? you do realize beck can cry on cue and that O’reilly loves himself some loofahs? please tell us you realize that.

  • valkyrie101

    germ,
Yes, a re-telling of the tale of chicken little. Oh no, the world is ending. If not for Obama, darn, why didn’t we listen to those neo-cons? The world is a less fearful place than it was 30 years ago. Why should the future not also be better?

  • MarkStr82Hell

Beck has the classic alcoholic personality. In his case a recovered alcoholic, but his behavior is textbook. O’Reilly has somewhat narcissistic; however he is without question the smartest of the four and the reason why his have been number one for the past 10 years. Respect

Wow , She explained it like she was talking to a bunch of third graders. The I Q of her audience is this low? LOL

  • MarkStr82Hell

    Jack,
    We ARE talking democrats!
    1) College kids who live off their parents
    2) African Americans (‘Nough Said)
    3) Gays who have the mental maturity of college kids in order to attract the young ones

I love Bush. I respect him more than most republicans, who struggle to reconcile him. Bush was a great man, and a patriot, who cared, and did his best, after winning the lawful election, perhaps the greatest election in history. As President, he played the bad guy cop to the bad guys. Bless him for being strong. Obama is the good cop. His way is different, but complimentary to the bad cop. Bush is the right hand, Obama the left hand. Peace is what we need, otherwise, we will be slaves to a war that will never end. Obama knows the Islamic teachings, he can speak their language, that is the value of Obama having an Islamic education. He is no doubt a Christian, these days. That can not be denied. But if we can broker a peace, if Obama can do that, we will spare ourselves an endless war, and the tragedy in human resources. Thus, I say again, why do you not support the lawful President, do you not believe in our country, the choice of free men and woman in a democratic process? The President, the country, needs your support. Seriously, dudes.

  • MarkStr82Hell

Deep Val….I wish I had your pot!

  • valkyrie101

LOL. Nice idea. But don’t those christian right people take a dim view of weed and alcohol? Some of these tea partiers have less in common than meets the eye, other than disliking Obama. Be interesting to see how this tea party movement works out. I am cheering for it. I hope it becomes a new party. The whole idea of a tea party is inherently American, and cool.

  • TylerDurden

Eugene Robinson: President of the Democratic shills.

MarkStr82Hell: It brings a TEAR to my EYE knowing that people like you are the VOICE of our Movement… on the FRONT LINES of the TEA PARTY, singing the praises of GLENN BECK and SARAH PALIN … GOD BLESS YOU, sir!!1 People like you are DEFINING what it means to be a Right-Thinking American in today’s America, and I wouldn’t have it ANY OTHER WAY!!1

  • TylerDurden

RM, I thought you were going to say the “mean old man” noticing that the doughnut shop and the Swimming Pool deliveries arrived at the same time, convinced the delivery truck owner to eliminate one job and have the same driver deliver the supplies to both shops. That would be mean , right RM???

  • TylerDurden

Sounds like Karl Spensen is a black gay college student living at home.
    LOL

    Rachel who?

  • http://www.karlspensen.blogspot.com Karl Spensen

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA GOOD ONE Tyler!!!1 Blacks and gays are the WORST, right??!!!1

  • Munch

Well, at least she reach her audience’s intelligence level.

    MarkStr82Hell:

“Beck has the classic alcoholic personality. In his case a recovered alcoholic, but his behavior is textbook.”

I agree 100%. That is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. That is the paradox of most recovering addicts.

  • TonyClifton

“Rachel Maddow went on a bit of a deviation from her usual style on her program last night…”

That’s for sure! She did a whole segment without calling somebody a hypocrite or an extremist. I was surprised when she didn’t make a connection between the mean old man and Tim McVeigh.

  • tws258

Funny , I wasn’t sure what Rachel was pointing at in the beginning, I thought that she was the main drag.

  • http://www.anonymousfinch.com AnonymousFinch

It’s clear that she has Glenn Beck envy. I see a chalkboard in her future.

  • MarkStr82Hell

    Completely agree, AF

Ah yes, the homophobes MarkStr82Hell and valkyrie101, who “hates” to use the word gay so derisively like daughter does but does it anyway, are out and proud today. The illustrations may be juvenile and a little goofy, but the process explanation of the transactions I found clear and I LOVE her show. Sorry, teabaggers, Bill O’Reilly might have the cloistered old population (and there’s evidence the Nielsens are not even accurate about that–look it up), but Keith, Rachel, Jon and other liberals you hate are viewed via other means. I don’t need to rely on cable to view them, especially when GOP Foxaganda is attached to all cable packages.

  • valkyrie101

A homophobe is someone who fears homosexuals. Certainly not my problem, I celebrate them.

I am gay, so I am hardly a homnphobe

  • valkyrie101

You have never heard of the expression, it is “gay”, meaning, odd? Gay men happily embraced that notion. Even the Polish learned to live with the ethnic jokes. At least here in the U.S., it is OK to laugh about gaydom, because gaydom is cool. All of us who are cool laugh with each other, and often at the other’s expense, provide some goon natured ribbing. It is not personal, or laden with anti-gay intent, so how can it be homophobic? Rush Limbaugh is waiting. :-)

“Rachel Maddow went on a bit of a deviation from her usual style on her program last night–”

Oh, so it didn’t suck and she didn’t insult the intelligence of her viewers for once?

“she told a story set in Tiny Town, USA.”

Oh, okay. So it probably did suck and she’s clearly insulting the intelligence of her viewers yet again. I though you said this was a deviation from her usual style?
