Regis Philbin Sets Official Date For His Final Appearance As Live Host
Last January, Regis Philbin announced that he would be stepping down as host of Live, the venerable morning show he’s been hosting since 1985. His final date wasn’t ever set and original plans for it to be sometime this summer were delayed. However, today during the first episode of the show’s fall season, Philbin made things official; his last day as host will be Friday, November 18th.
Philbin, like always, filled the announcement with jokes. The 79 year old joked about delaying the date again and then joked that co-host Kelly Ripa was just excited to do the show with a “young, hot, stud.” Until then, the host will keep doing what he’s always done in a season that’s been dedicated to honoring the show’s “favorite moments,” what the official website calls a “Celebration Season.”
Once he leaves, the show will have a search for a new host which will apparently be similar to the way Ripa was discovered in 2001, following the departure of original co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. Still, it will be hard to find anyone who can handle moments like this as entertainingly as Regis.
Watch the announcement clip from ABC below and then enjoy our recent list of some of Philbin’s best Live moments:
