Sen. Harry Reid On MSNBC: The Tea Party With Their ‘Extreme Positions’ Is ‘Short-Lived’

Video

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sat for an interview with Lawrence O’Donnell and discussed nuclear power plants, nuclear waste and budget battles. However, his most interesting comments came when he revealed his thoughts on the longevity of the Tea Party and when he told everyone from Congressional Republicans to President Obama to back off on trying to “fix” Social Security.

O’Donnell asked if now there are three parties in Washington with the Tea Party and wondered whether it’s harmful with Tea Party politicians like Senator Rand Paul “who seems to have taken an oath against compromise?” Reid responded:

“I believe the Tea Party is short-lived. I think you will find even the people that claim they are Tea Party folks will either be gone as a result of their extreme positions or they will move to the more moderate position, which is certainly not being a liberal, that is being a conservative. I think with the economy getting better, you’re going to see less and less agitation from the Tea Party folks.”

When the conversation turned towards the Social Security “emergency,” Reid claimed that for the next thirty years social security is not in crisis and wanted everyone to stop focusing on it. “I believe in Social Security, I think it’s the most successful social program in the history of the world,” Reid boasted. O’Donnell suggested even Obama was considering measures to protect the solvency of Social Security in the future, but Reid said, “I’ve never been bashful in telling the President how I feel about statements he makes that I disagree with.” Reid then declared that he doesn’t want to look at changing anything about Social Security until twenty years from now. Well Reid is right, he’s certainly not bashful.

    Reid is INSANE.

Reid’s position on Tea Party very murky .

Is this the same Harry Reid that said the surge was a failure, and the Iraq war was lost?

  • felixw

How about the extreme positions of the people who fired gunshots into the windows of the Washington DC Republican Party office? How about the extreme position of the people who have made threats against more the a dozen Republican legislators in Wisconsin.

Funny how the same media that wants to present a picture of extremist and violent tea parties — despite the absence of a single violent incident at a tea party — refuses to cover actual threats and violence coming from the Left.

How about it, Rachel, are you going to report on threats against Republicans the same way you invented allegations against the tea party? How about it Chris, are you going to cover the gunshots in D.C. with the same zeal with which you present your Republican smear du jour? How about it Ed, are you going to mention the out-of-control anger on the far left, stirred up by your network, which is resulting in threats and acts of violence?

Talk about extreme. With Japan and the Middle east in such turmoil is now the time for President and Michelle Obama to travel to Latin America? A funny but sad video.

Does this piece of shit Reid remember saying “The war is over, we lost,” just before the Surge saved all our marbles and according to even Joe Biden [broken clock, twice a day] tje USA has now WON in Iraq. This silly fool keeps on topping himself. So does Biden when Joe-boy claims OBAMA won the Iraq War. GWB is better than all three put together.

That would be because he is a waste of a good social security number can only speak like a partisan hack who could give two shits about the nation, as long as he gets to keep his power. How about this, he is a decadent frak who has been sucking off of us for so long that he has no idea how the real world works? Here is another one, he wishes that he was the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party so he could just put all those Tea Party slime balls in a re-education camp rather than having to put up with their shit.

Now, let’s be honest, if Senator Jim DeMint had called Code Pink or , an extremist group who is short lived, how long do you think it would be before every left wing media outlet, every democrat politician would be calling for him to get the frak out of DC. Now I only use Mr. DeMint because he is the opposite of Mr. Reid. So where is the line between “experienced politician” and “dangerous zealot who is a menace to society”?

Harry Reid is a decadent partisan who would say the sky is green if a non-democrat said the sky was blue. Such a person, on either side of the aisle is dangerous because he/she will piss on his oath to the nation (us) if he/she thinks it will keep them in power. To be fair, we are now beginning to see how the house republican leadership view the Tea Party people. Both sides mock them at their peril.

There are %$ MILLION recipients of SS benefits today. With the baby Boomers now just starting to come online and the recent increase in longevity that number is going to rapid increase.

I’m collecting SS and have been for years but I am willing to take an immediate cut. SS is my sole source of income but I have a huge advantage in that I own my home free and clear.

With large numbers receiving benefits a minor cut in those benefits represent big savings.

At just $10 per month per recipient the savings to the treasury would be a 1/2 billion dollars a month or six billion a year minimum now that the roles are growing at a faster rate.

For those worried about the very low end recipients taking an equal hit with high enders a schedule could be worked out starting at $1 or $2 per month at the bottom end and going up to $20 or $30 at the high end. I am opoosed to this unprecedented massive deficit spending for myself but mainly for the impact on my children and grandchildren and should be willing to put my money where my mouth is.

  • Grammie

    Edit button PLEASE!

    There are 54 MILLION

  • writer

It’s okay, Grammie. I’ve read many posts from the left saying that pretty soon there aren’t going to be any old people.

  • BatBoy

    Let’s all play – “HOW MANY TIMES…”

HOW MANY TIMES…has the left predicted Sarah Palin’s had been destroyed only to see her rise back up even stronger.
HOW MANY TIMES… has the left had a funeral for the Tea Party only to see them rise back up even stronger.
HOW MANY TIMES…were we told the Democrats would take both Houses of Congress during the last election only to see the republicans rise back up even stronger.

When playing How Many Times…it is always the same result. I find that funny.

Hint, don’t take any advice from Harry and bet your life savings with it, …that is unless you want to bet me.

I don’t know about dangerous zealot. I feel pretty sure there are plenty of dishonest corrupt self serving swine, in both parties and we need to do a better job of weeding them out. Reid would probably have been replaced last election of not for the GOP choice of candidate. Just an opinion.

Not only does Reid resent a large segment of Americans, he is truly a despicable human being. I’m still trying to figure out how the people of Nevada could have re-elected this charlatan. Clearly he is projecting his wishes in this case, even though there is no evidence that the Tea Party has lost support or momentum. I think many people are starting to realize that the Tea Party is not an extreme movement – but rather one comprised of regular people who want less government, less spending, and a free market. I would go so far as to say the Tea Party’s fate will be the opposite of Reid’s prognostication. Rather, I feel the Tea Party has tapped into the basic human desire of wanting to make a difference. I think it represents the best hope we have to save this country from collapse.

what is missed in Mr Reid’s misunderstanding is that a large percentage of tea-partiers range from ‘center-right to conservative’. The headlines (and the liberals that instinctively seize on them) imply a ‘far right leaning crowd’ when these people represent only a very few of those who might label themselves sympathetic to tea party causes. I’ve walked in 3 tea party events. Nearly all attending were as ‘middle America common sense folks’ as you could meet anywhere.

Look at this drivel, “tea baggers otherwise known as the tea party and other organizations of hate are brought to light by men like majority leader Reid..”. I mean, what is next, “murder a Muslim for Christ?” It is this sort of crap that starts wars and gets people dead.

  • Snidely

Either Harry Reid is delusional or he is a liar. Or both. I’m speaking about his comments about Social Security, not the Tea Party. I think he’s hoping the Tea Party will go away, and that he’s joined in that hope by establishment Republicans of all stripes. He can’t believe that anyone would want to prevent politicians from buying votes with their constituents’ money.
On Social Security, he’s trying to maintain the fiction that there is actually money in the system to pay benefits into the future. In reality, all that’s in the system is IOU’s, payable to beneficiaries, that have to be paid with assessments on US citizens, or more debt sold to someone.

  • PC Kryptonite

As conservatives we never really know who we’re talking to from the other side, are they just strictly partisan Democrats and all they see is just a battle between the parties completely oblivious that their party has been taken over by Saul Alinsky radicals and don’t even understand who he is and what he’s about? Or are we responding to knowing Alinsky disciples popped from the Van Jones self avowed communist mold?

If the 100% authentic grassroots movement known as the tea party isn’t long-lived than it won’t be long before the great experiment of delivered the maximum amount of individual freedom, liberty and prosperity to a people in world history that is America will soon fail. Just as Saul Alinsky, Van Jones and the rest of the radicals that have rallied under different flags such as progressivism, communism, socialism and liberalism, all come from the same root philosophy. Years ago I was a Democrat at the party that carries that name today is not the same party, it’s the epitome of self-deception not to see that or you want that truly unattainable Alinsky utopia, and you’re willing to destroy America to find that out.

    Not happening!

  • Davo

I think Reid is just doing what DIMS here do…………….whistle past the graveyard. His wishful thinking won’t heal the knot he got knocked on his head last November, and he knows there are more “knocks” coming in ’12. He’s rightfully running scared.

Personally, I’d like to see the Tea Party separate from the Republicans, letting Boehner and the rest of the “business-as-usual” Republicans just die out like a melted candle. There should be a plain language platform that political candidates sign a contract to support, and have them reviewed and cast out if they don’t act in accordance with that contract.

American cannot afford to get suckered by fake Tea Party politicians like the DIMS are continually suckered by their DemonCrits. Time is too short. Make the real ones known so we can get behind them en masse.

As a public service, here is a complete summary and rebuttal to each and every lame comment on this thread:

    1) You point being?
    2) Double negatives mean you are agreeing with this statement: “LOL the only extremists are the loons that believe that Social Security is going broke.” Spoken by a true loon.
    3) It’s been done, a country song called “Momma don’t raise your sons to be teabaggers.
    4) Only a big, massively swollen brain could have come up with something this brilliant. If only you could teach by example and leave blank posts. Our imagination would fill in the rest.
    5) Ah, the eloquence of a homeless bum standing on a rotting milk crate hoping that someone will throw a dollar in his cup so he can scurry off any buy some Wild Irish Rose.
    6) Unfortunately, your extreme positions are the result of an overtaxed your mind. Trying thinking. It’s hard, but will serve as good exercise.
    7) Thank you for being such a compassionate animal lover. You seem eminently qualified to clean said pasture.
    8) So sad that you are turned on by imagining Harry Reid in woman’s clothing. Is he inspiring your future choices in cross dressing?
    9) Another closet homosexual concerned with something short and harry
    10) Currently working on spelling in 3rd grade at Dreamland Academy (Arkansas)
    11) Doesn’t want any more homeless bums competing for coins…
    12) Must have been watching reruns on the Disney Channel
    13) Is this the same right wing shill who believes there in no Fox bias?
    14) Too busy destroying his own basement while writing this post to notice all the hate crimes of right wing extremists.
    15) Nobody really wins a war, you fool. Go talk to the thousands of families who lost love ones over an illegal and unnecessary war.
    16) Funny how even homeless bums can access the internet at the library. Please don’t drool on the public keyboards.
    17) The sad part is that you actually think the video is funny. Where were you while Dubya was singing happy birthday to McCain during Katrina?
    18) Don’t worry, they won’t come for you because you can’t rhyme, let alone have an original thought.
    19) Good Lord, another necrophiliac coming out of the closet.
    20) Answer: politician and stupid are synonyms.
    21) It only makes perfect sense to someone who has been living in manure. You need to get out of that pasture.
    22) Okay, it’s one thing to compare politicians with stupid people, but you’ve gone to far bringing in NASCAR drivers. Now, you’re insulting the stupid people.
    23) The only book that has to be delivered with a winch.
    24) Spoken by someone who idolizes brain damaged men with missing teeth
    25) It’s hilarious just seeing your avatar. No need to read further.
    26) You did notice that this book is about Republican dirty tricks, didn’t you? But a nice companion volume to the Karl Rove “Big Book of Cheap Shots and Dirty tactics.”
    27) Realistic is not included in the Fox commemorative dictionary
    28) You’re right. No sane person can believe Republicans put party ahead of country.
    29) GWB is better… just get the straight jacket for this guy
    30) Another erudite reference to the Disney Channel. I can hardly wait until your intellect catches up to Nickelodeon.
    31) Incomprehensible ranting… In other words, Senator DeMint is also a decadent partisan, etc. etc. etc. followed by incomprehensible ranting.
    32) So, you can quote one famous imaginary person correctly.
    33) It is funny that Pablo claims to know one thing. Most people would be embarrassed by this kind of admission.
    34) Wonderful logic. Let’s take more money from the poorest to balance a budget destroyed by handouts to the rich.
    35) It’s too bad there isn’t an edit button for your brain.
    36) Disney claims to have read something.
    37) How many times will we have to read the same moronic post.
    38) You can’t reason with posts that are basically digital cat litter.
    39) Thank God you’ve got a job. You’re worth every penny you earn. All two of them.
    40) No, Nevada should have elected Sharon Angle. With the tea party agenda in place, we will all buy medical services with chickens. Nothin’ like the free market.
    41) Seriously, what are you doing posting here?
    42) Wow, more Madlibs! How many monkeys did it take to type up that brilliant rejoinder?
    43) So, by the transitive property, there are terrorists in the Republican party. You do remember who said “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice”, right?
    44) Who knew they could train monkeys to use video cameras?
    45) When you state an “or” proposition, one is true and the other isn’t. Therefore you have either stated a half-fact, or a half-assed statement. But maybe in you case, we can make an exception to the rule and give you credit for both.
    46) When cat litter starts making sense to you, it’s time to go offline.
    47) Republicans would call Dwight Eisenhower a socialist today, so I’m having a little problem with your definition of “center-right to conservative.”
    48) Don’t insult that poor man – he is doing everything in his power to rise above the level of the gutter.
    49) Wow. One lunatic telling another to make sense. Try hibernation. Maybe you’ll make sense by Spring.
    50) Your mind is like a haiku.
    Eight syllables of nonsense?
Oops, you made a big boo-boo.
    51) Most sensible post of the day. Wait, you weren’t addressing Gordo?
    52) Proof that there are lunatics on the left. Just not an entire party.
    53) Drunk cocaine addicted bush… sounds like the beginning of another haiku.
    54) You realize you are talking about yourself, don’t you? Or is this a bizarre form of somnambulism.
    55) Apparently feel off board one too many times. Unemployment under 9%. Corporations setting all-time records for profits. But wait! Republicans are advocating a budget that will derail the recovery and prevent the creation of 1,100,000 jobs over two years. Maybe you’re part of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    56) Half of the union membership? Last I saw, even working class Republicans are pissed off in Wisconsin and wouldn’t vote for Walker. How is that going to work the Republicans in 2012? Or is there a local chapter of the manure sweepers in your little pasture?
    57) You fill up three litter boxes full of mental feces and you correct one word? Meow!
    58) The reality is, before Dubya there was a surplus and Social Security was fully funded.
    60) Cogent sentences? Fact-based reality? Rational, logical thinking? Not happening!
    61) Amazing. 276 words typed without ranting “anti-American liberal.” Almost a rational thought floating about.
    62) Again, why must you insist on discussing Harry’s length? You guys really need to take a vacation.
    63) I don’t know about Reid, but fortunately, your case is already obvious.
    64) I didn’t know you had such a personal relationship with harry’s reid.

The tea party are quite possibly the stupidest group of people in our entire 200+ year history. If they’re terrified at the scawy black guy in the White house cause he’s a ‘socialist’, I shudder to think what they’d think of these past presidents:

The Tea-Party: Isn’t that the Party that forced out over 600 RINO’s and Progressives in the last election? Ya, their real stupid? Afraid of the Black guy in office? How many of you Liberal fools still think he’s Black? What does the Tea-Party think of past presidents? The Tea-Party is a result of too many moronic passed presidents, and politicians in general. Obimbo is merely the straw that broke the camels back. Is the Tea-Party a one-time effort? It’s more likely, the Tea-Party will take over Washington. We have suffered to many fools and we cannot afford to suffer any more like Obimbo.

Hey “americanborn”, read the tea party mission statement and tell me what part you object to. Just wondering.

The impetus for the Tea Party movement is excessive government spending and taxation. Our mission is to attract, educate, organize, and mobilize our fellow citizens to secure public policy consistent with our three core values of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets
