Sen. Mitch McConnell Says He Will Oppose START Treaty

video

This morning, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he will oppose the START Treaty, which has been one of President Obama’s top foreign policy priorities. In an interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley on State of the Union, he told Crowley: “I’ve decided that I cannot support the treaty. I think the verification provisions are inadequate and I do worry about the missile defense implications of it.”

He further added: “The McCain amendment yesterday regarding missile defense was defeated, and I know the administration actually sent a letter up yesterday, indicating they’re committed to missile defense. But an equally important question is: How do the Russians view missile defense, and how do our European allies view missile defense? And I’m concerned about it. I think if they’d taken more time with this-rushing it right before Christmas, it strikes me as trying to jam us. I think if they’d taken more time-I know the members of the Foreign Relations Committee spent a lot of time on this but the rest of us haven’t-and so all of a sudden we’re once again trying to rush things right here before Christmas Eve. I think that was not the best way to get the support of people like me.”

Yesterday, President Obama sent a three-page letter to Senator McConnell about START, outlining his views on the Treaty and urging the Senate to make ratification of the Treaty a priority this coming week. Politico’s Mike Allen observed in Playbook this morning that McConnell’s opposition “makes ratification this week a lot harder, but not impossible.”

Anybody shocked by this turtle not being able to support anything that has to do with the President?

Further evidence that the Republicans want us to get hit by a terrorist attack again in order to win politically. Completely unamerican and traitorous that the Republicans wont vote for this bill and denied help to the 911 first responders. I hope at some point in their lives before their deaths they atone for what they have done.

Fact: We shouldn’t give away delivery vehicles for number of fixed base warheads. We shouldn’t show them are defensive capabilities in our star wars defense. Ozero is a bubbling idiot!

  • DavidB

The treaty was signed in April, multiple hearings have been held and now McConnell talks about Dems trying to “rush it through right before Christmas.”
Apart from childish impetuousness, why didn’t he and former patriot John McCain voice their concerns at any time these past 8 months?

  • BatBoy

This is a smart move…slow it down…don’t rush it…do it right!

  • DavidB

Instead of checking thumbs down, why don’t you explain your position? If you’re able, that is. Or are you just a bunch of misinformed Fox f-tards?

  • Thelonious Funk

What? Obama wants to kill or capture bin-Laden? I oppose!

Anyone shocked at the fact that you missed McConnell at the tax bill signing ceremony? Nope.

Because it hasn’t been before the Senate for the past 8 months.

Yes, that very same protocol kept African Americans in the back of the bus for decades. There is no reason we can’t put Amerika’s security in the back of the bus for decades, either.

Even the WP says defeated legislators should not return to legislate . There should be no lame duck session .

I’m shocked, shocked I say, that Chinless Mitch would do anything which might jeopardize national security and our troops in the mere hope of some political advantage. It is so unlike Chinless Mitch and his Republican cohorts to do something like this. Unprecedented!

Indeed, we ought never have allowed this stinking flower of bi-partisanship to bloom even for a short month. It could well devour the Republic.

DavidB, perhaps it’s time for a refresher course:

And, as I’m sure you know, the Senate is charged with advising and consenting on the ratification of treaties. Rubberstamping does not constitute advice and consent.

  • michiganruth

good for McConnell. this treaty doesn’t help American security, it harms it.

the Democrats keep trying to pull this crap by throwing all this legislation out there the week before xmas. they did it last year too. they have apparently already forgotten–or maybe never learned–the lessons of November 2.

but that’s ok. soon it will be buh-bye to the old, hello to the new, and Pelosi will be back to obscurity, leading the minority further into cluelessness…aaahhhh….

Be opposing what we need for our national security, Mitch McConnell is showing the country that he’s putting politics before country. God, the stupidity of this man grows every day. (Maybe he watches FoxPAC noise, where stupidity is drummed into their viewers day after day.)

McConnell is such a hole, “rush things right before Christmas Eve.” These things don’t take that long ever in history, but McConnell is just doing what he’s been doing for 2 years: delay, delay, and just say no. The good people of KY need to just say no to McConnell next time he runs for re-election.

  • Probably NOT wrong

GBR, maybe you should start a private blog
and call it the MitchMcConnellReview! That will
show him whats whats around these parts!

There are lose nukes in Russia and it was the US that identified and preserved the nuclear weapons in the country to keep them from falling into the hands of terrorists. McConnell is an ego driven, misguided old man who has consistantly worked against the President and the people of this country conspicuously over the last two years. He has used his position of authority carelessly, shamelessly and without regard to real world consequences. The START treaty is necessary for world peace and to hold our position of leadership in the world. He is weakening this country in the eyes of the world, and his ignorance is no excuse for damaging our national security. The diplomats negotiated this treaty, they are the professionals ad their judgements weigh heavily on the acceptance of this treaty. McConnell is dangerous and his leadership has been and will continue to be damaging to the nation.

This is news? If Obama proclaimed he liked country music McConnell would suddenly become a hip hop fan. For those of us who live in Kentucky, Mitch McConnell is an embarrassment.

McConnell is acting against the best interest of the United States in opposing this treaty. This treaty and its predecessors have had widespread bi-partisan support. This type of political behavior puts the U.S. at risk as well as restricts our knowledge of what is happening inside the country with the biggest nuclear arsenal in the world besides us. This is a poorly thought out strategic position.

If Mitch McConnell doesn’t see a sizable monetary gain in something or something for nothing, he will oppose it. Mitch is too young to thing about moral standards he is still heavy into the Gold Standard.

The gist of the START treaty: The US has to dismantle some of its missiles and materiel while Russia gets to build more missiles and increase its capabilities to deliver them. Now how in the hell is THAT a smart move?

Not only has Obama bumped Jimmy Carter to take the title of “Worst President in the history of the United States” but it appears the 111th (lame Duck) Congress now appears to have secured the title of the “Worst Congress of the U.S.

Jonathan Scott, you are the “completely unamerican and traitorous” person. First you typically use Saul-Alinsky smears, as your boss directs apparently. And now, here in November, the Russians have clearly shown that the START treaty concerns of we conservatives have been UNDENIABLY PROVEN RIGHT.  The Russians themselves have debunked You and your ideological soul-mate Obama…and every single RINO that went along with the communist in chief.

You are inept, and debunked. Go away from us, and never, ever spew your views of philosophy and foreign policy again. You guys are far more stupid than Neville Chamberlain.  And we know you never atone for “what they have done.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1286231129 Paul Ross

And the Russians clearly were in no hurry to pass it. The  Russians now clearly feel no compunction to adhere to it either.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1286231129 Paul Ross

U R Yet another typical Saul-Alinskyite smear creep, who does not realize when the Russians proved conservatives were right. ..that the safety of our world is at stake, and your liberal appeasement policies are the extremely dangerous positions.  Not conservative cautions and sensibility.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1286231129 Paul Ross

The Senate Democrat leadership prevented ANY opposition experts testimony in those supposed “multiple hearings”.  And now the whole thing which you creeps pushed through without any serious study with your ‘chidlish impetuousness’ is crashing as the Russians prove EXACTLY what we conservatives were warning everyone of…there is no agreement, and they think it gives them supremacy, and veto power.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1286231129 Paul Ross

Yeah, it is amazing how they out themselves!   All  these liberals pretend to be “concerned” and “intelligent” and “respectful” and yes, “loving”.
    LOL!!!!
