i don’t think it would have killed the NYT to add the three names they left off. the list is so small, it seems silly to not have included them. and like i said, i think whoopi was especially sensitive to the matter because the oscars had left her off the *former host* reel in 2008.

In the context of the article, it’s obvious they are referring to the period of time since Berry and Washington won. Not to mention there’s been more than 73 years of Academy Awards. SHEESH!

Half of those you listed were honored AFTER 2001. The article said PRIOR to 2001 there were seven. The Times was absolutely correct in their statement.

It’s obvious the period of time to which they refer is the period of time up to and including Washington and Berry – the “Real change…” That being significant in that they as blacks won both best actor and best actress.

Furthermore, the first Academy Awards were in 1928. Washington and Berry won in 2001. 73 years refers to 2001 (Washington & Berry won) -1928 (first Academy Awards). McDaniel won in 1940. 1940 + 73 = 2013. In other words, 73 years ago was not when McDaniel won. Furthermore, the writer continues with “After Mr. Washington and Ms. Berry, there would be…” This clearly refers to the next five black actors (Washington was not included because he had previously won) who won. Goldberg WAS NOT one of them, so therefore she WAS NOT included in that that list. Through 2001 the were seven black actors who won. After that there were five new black actors who won, plus Washington who repeated. That is the total of thirteen black actors who won.
