A gunman who ambushed Border Patrol agents in McAllen, Texas, was shot and killed when agents returned fire, according to Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin.
The shooter, who was wearing tactical gear and brandishing a rifle, ambushed agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol facility in the Texas border town, Melugin reported.
“No federal agents injured,” he added. “Im told a McAllen police officer may have been shot, but is in stable condition.”
In a statement to Fox News, the Department of Homeland Security said, “This morning, an individual opened fired at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas. Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter. This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI. More information will be shared as it becomes available.”
The Fox reporter’s sources described the attack as a “purposeful ambush.” Melugin posted photos of the scene on X, formerly Twitter, which showed the alleged shooter, as well as the entrance of the facility with bullet holes in the glass.
The identity of the gunman has yet to be released. A press conference on the shooting is set for later Monday morning.
