Trump Lashes Out at ‘Leakin’ James Comey’ Minutes After Comey Rebukes Trump Attacks on Rule of Law

Former FBI Director James Comey addressed reporters Friday afternoon following several hours of closed-door testimony on Capitol Hill, and delivered a sharp rebuke of Donald Trump‘s “attacks on the rule of law.”

Comey answered questions for a few minutes, but was unable to comment on several issues because, as he explained, the FBI doesn’t want him divulging details related to ongoing investigations.

Within minutes of Comey’s appearance, Trump attacked him on Twitter, and seized on the FBI’s guidance to smear him.

“It is being reported that Leakin’ James Comey was told by Department of Justice attorneys not to answer the most important questions,” Trump tweeted. “Total bias and corruption at the highest levels of previous Administration. Force him to answer the questions under oath!”

Ironically, it was leaks by congressional Republicans that caused Comey to resist testifying behind closed doors, before finally agreeing to do so on the condition that the full transcript would be released within 24 hours.

And Comey’s lawyer recently explained that his client did not want his words to be “twisted” by Republicans, which appears to be exactly what Trump has done. It is longstanding FBI policy not to discuss details of an ongoing investigation.
