Don Lemon, Jeff Zucker and Chris Licht Reunited (Sort of)

Megawatt stars are a common sight at the Polo Bar in Manhattan, but one guest overshadowed all else when Hollywood super-agent Jay Sures held court for his birthday last night: cable news drama.

That was no mean feat Thursday night, as the birthday boy’s table of eight was seated right next to First Lady Jill Biden. But she was not the source of all the buzz.

Sures was celebrating with, among others, former CNN luminaries Don Lemon, Jeff Zucker, and Allison Gollust. Not surprising, since they were all spotted at Sures’ star-studded wedding in July.

No, it was who was sitting across the room that made things — let’s say interesting. Also drinking in the celebratory atmosphere within eyeshot: Chris Licht, Zucker’s short-lived successor and the man who fired Don Lemon.

We are told there was no communication between the tables, but everyone was acutely aware of each others’ presence.

Zucker spent nearly a decade at the top of CNN, reshaping the network and bringing in big ratings and big profits during the Trump era. He was forced out of the job — when new leadership took over in the Warner Bros. Discovery merger — over his failure to disclose a relationship with Gollust.

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, selected Licht, a successful television producer who at the time served as EP of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, to serve as Zucker’s successor.

There was no love lost between Licht and Zucker. Licht was said to resent the love many still had for Zucker at CNN, and The New York Times reported that Zucker criticized Licht to media reporters and CNN hosts he remained friends with. The two even had lunch at Zucker’s Amagansett home to clear the air, the Times reported, but the “get-together didn’t kindle much bonhomie between the media executives, who had been friendly in the clubby world of TV news.”

Last year, Licht appointed Lemon to lead CNN’s flagship morning show — and then fired him months in, ostensibly over the controversy that followed comments Lemon made on air about women.

Soon after that, Licht himself was forced out by Zaslav over a series of stumbles that outraged staff and viewers, including a town hall with former President Donald Trump and that profile in The Atlantic.

In the months since, Licht has kept a low profile. His appearance at a media hot spot could signal he’s getting back in the game — but it’s doubtful he’ll be playing with Sures, Zucker, Gollust and Lemon.
