Captain America: Brave New World actor Anthony Mackie told fans to “chill the f**k out” when asked about “inevitable comparisons” between President Donald Trump and his film’s Red Hulk.
Mackie spoke with Esquire about his character Sam Wilson/Falcon stepping into the role of Captain America for the upcoming Marvel feature and at one point he was asked about “inevitable comparisons” that will be made between Trump and Red Hulk, a hulked-out version of President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).
“I hope, as a country, we’re tired of all the political jousting,” Mackie said. “Let’s just go to the movies and chill the fuck out.”
Mackie said in these divided times, it wouldn’t matter what color the hulked-out character was.
“We could’ve made this motherfucker yellow and it would’ve been a problem,” he said.
Mackie is no stranger to divisive politics and their influence on social media. He drew criticism for recent comments in which he said “America” was not one of the things he thought represented Captain America.
“For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things. And I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable,” he said during a promotional event.
After backlash, Mackie took to Instagram to clean up his original comments.
“Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime. I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country,” he said. “CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
