Actress Cheryl Hines revealed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. offered to pretend they were separated to take the heat off her during his presidential run.

Prior to joining President Donald Trump’s cabinet as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kennedy made a serious push for the Oval Office as a third-party candidate. As the election drew closer — and polling data indicated that Kennedy may have been siphoning votes from Trump and increasing the likelihood of a Kamala Harris presidency — Kennedy decided to drop out and formally endorse Trump. In return, Trump nominated him for HHS secretary shortly after the start of his term.

In an interview with Fox News Digital published Monday, Hines revealed that Kennedy’s controversial stances on healthcare related issues led to her receiving criticism, as well. It actually got so bad that Kennedy offered to lie to the public and say they were separated. Fox News reported of her comments:

“In my book, ‘Unscripted,’ I talk about this because things got … dramatic during this presidential campaign,” Hines said, referencing her new memoir. “Some people were very upset that I was even married to Bobby. They were vocally coming at me because I’m married to Bobby. So Bobby felt like, ‘You shouldn’t be having to take that heat. So why don’t we just say we’re separated?'”

Hines ultimately rejected the idea, and she said that tumultuous period helped them grow closer together.
