‘You Idiot!’ Stephen Colbert Absolutely Destroys Mitch McConnell for His Reasoning Against Abolishing the Filibuster

Stephen Colbert completely lost it on Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for his reasoning against abolishing the filibuster — calling him an “idiot” for not recognizing that regardless of the political procedure, the Senate rarely gets things done.

The host first engaged in a hilarious and incredibly endearing interaction with his wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert, during which he teased her for going to her high school dance with a boy named Champ.

“It was Al Philips! When you can’t remember, it was Al Philips!” Colbert said first when McGee-Colbert claimed to not remember who she attended the dance with.

“It was Champ Yarborough!?” Colbert responded once McGee-Colbert finally recalled who her date was. “Hi Champ. Hi Champ, good to see ya,” the host added looking straight at the camera. “She dated a guy named Champ! What chance do I have in high school — she’s dating a guy named Champ!”

Later in the episode, Colbert transferred his frustration to the Senate.

“One potential side effect to the coronavirus vaccine is that people are exposed to the idea that government can get things done,” he joked. “But Senate Republicans have a way of inoculating themselves from progress. It’s called filibuster.”

Colbert then explained what the filibuster is — a political procedure that allows the minority party to debate a proposed piece of legislation that does not have the support of 60 or more senators. Currently, it is often used to delay or even block a decision from being made.

“But in the last decade or so, it has gone from being a rarely used tool to a core element of Senator Mitch McConnell’s strategy as the Republican minority leader,” said Colbert, quoting a New York Times article.

The host clarified that Democrats, who now control the senate, would not need 60 votes to end the filibuster — just the simple majority — cracking that “you can’t filibuster changing the filibuster rules!”

“Democrats have not done anything about the filibuster yet, but there are murmurs, and rumors, which is enough to upset Mitch McConnell, who rose from the dead and from his seat to threaten to grind the Senate to a halt with procedural shenanigans.”

The late night host played a clip of McConnell arguing that “the Senate would be more like a 100-car pileup, nothing moving,” if the filibuster was abolished.

“It’s already happening, you idiot!! ― And the filibuster is why it’s happening!!” Colbert said following the clip. “If you threaten to blow up my head with a shotgun and I say, ‘Let’s take away that idiot’s shotgun,’ it’s not much of a threat to say, ’If you do, I’ll shoot you in the face five times with a crossbow.”
