Alexandra Pelosi Explains Why She Interviewed People Who Wanted to Kill Her Mother
Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, the daughter of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), was in the Capitol with her mother and teenage sons on January 6, 2021 and saw the insurrection unfold firsthand. She later found out that several of the people in attendance openly wanted to assassinate her mother, who was House speaker at the time — and it got her “curious.”
Pelosi, who appeared on ABC’s The View to promote her documentary The Insurrectionist Next Door about the people who participated in the riots, explained that despite the destructive events of that day as well as the threats against her mother, she wanted to know more about why they felt the way they did:
So January 6th, I was in the Capitol with my teenage sons. We saw… My sons were the first to call it, my teenage son was the first to call it. He said, “What if they break into the building?” He knew it was coming. So I saw those people from the window. I got to see them, almost like I got to see right there. [Referring to video shown on-screen] I got to see them. And I was always sort of curious, who are these people? Why did they come? They all came, you know, “Hang Mike Pence,” “We should have hung Nancy Pelosi from a lamp post.” And then after there were all these people that said these things like, “Oh, I’m so disappointed.” Mom texted her daughter, “Oh, I’m so disappointed. I didn’t get to put a bullet in Nancy Pelosi’s brain.” So I was really curious about these people.
These people have all been going through the courts now. And I was really curious about who these people are, because I, you know, I’m still… I think of it as like, my mom thinks this is just like my therapy. This is my coping mechanism, is that I have to go talk to them. She’s like, “Why would you want to talk to these people?”
To which co-host Ana Navarro chimed in, “You know margaritas are a lot easier.” Pelosi continued:
I just am looking for answers. I’m just curious. Yeah. And what led them there and what was so broken in their lives.
