5 Soldiers Shot at Georgia Fort Stewart Army Base

At least five soldiers have been shot after an active shooter situation was reported at a Georgia army base.

The Fort Stewart base, about an hour’s drive from Savannah, was alerted to an active shooter situation just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

“Five Soldiers were shot today in an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area,” according to a Facebook post from the base, which added, “There is no active threat to the community.”

The suspected gunman was taken into custody at about 11:35, according to the statement from the base.

The wounded soldiers were treated at the scene and later moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for additional treatment.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp initially called the situation a “tragedy.”

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp posted on X. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

Sen. Raphael Warnock added: “I’m heartbroken to see the news of an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart today. I’m monitoring the situation closely and join all of Georgia as we pray for the safety of our servicemembers, staff, and their families.”

President Donald Trump has also been briefed on the situation, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The base gave the “all-clear” just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. Information about the shooter and the wounded soldiers was not immediately available.

Established in 1940 as Camp Stewart, Fort Stewart is renowned for its sprawling ground and air training areas.
