Charlie Kirk, the influential right-wing activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was reportedly shot at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

“Bystanders report seeing Kirk shot near his neck during a Q&A with students,” reported Deseret News.

A number of social media users present at the event posted photos, video footage, and accounts of the shooting.

Just moments before the attack, Kirk’s X account tweeted, “Utah Valley University is FIRED UP and READY for the first stop back on the American Comeback Tour.”

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) was among the first to confirm that something had happened when he stated that he was “tracking the situation at Utah Valley University closely.”

“Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there,” he added.

Shortly after the news of the shooting began to spread, FBI Director Kash Patel issued the following statement:

We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.

According to a university alert, “A single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker. Police are investigating now, suspect in custody.” Subsequently, police announced that they had determined that the man they had detained was not actually the shooter.

This is a developing story.
