White Smoke Rises Over Vatican as New Pope Is Chosen
White smoke is now rising over the Vatican, meaning the Papal Conclave has selected a new pope after four votes.
Crowds of the faithful packed into St. Peter’s Square, cheering and waving flags as the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica tolled.
Now, the world waits for the next leader of the Catholic Church.
The conclave has been in session since Wednesday, as cardinals gathered to cast their vote for the next pontiff following the death of Pope Francis on April 21.
Eighty-nine votes were required among the 113 cardinals to determine the winner.
The new pope will reveal himself at the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica shortly.
