‘Can I Finish Talking?’ The View’s Sunny Hostin Wonders Why Trump Isn’t Rounding Up Illegal Canadian Migrants — As Co-Host Tries Correcting Her

The View’s Sunny Hostin claimed on Wednesday that President Donald Trump is only interested in deporting illegal migrants that “look a certain way” while ignoring the Canadian border, prompting Alyssa Farah Griffin to attempt to jump in with a correction.

During a discussion on the current administration’s immigration policies on The View, Hostin argued that Trump is not interested in stopping illegal immigration because he’s not as focused on America’s northern border as he is its southern border with Mexico.

“I think what’s fascinating to me is yes, he ran on immigration and he ran really on the southern border because we know we also border Canada and that’s actually the largest border, but they’re not really going into Canada and looking for those Canadian people that are kind of jumping back and forth,” Hostin said.

Griffin jumped in and tried explaining that most migrants crossing from the Canadian border are not actual Canadians but rather from countries like India and Mexico. Border Patrol has noted amid increases of encounters at the northern border that many perceive the crossing as safer.

“This is a misnomer. It’s not Canadians who come across the northern border,” Griffin told Hostin on Wednesday. “This is a misnomer. It’s not Canadians who come across the northern border.”

Hostin called Hostin’s statement “not true” because she spoke to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) about the subject, referring to a recent appearance by the governor on the talk show.

In 2024, there were nearly 200,000 encounters at the northern border, according to Border Patrol data. Among those encounters, approximately 40,000 were Indian nationals, more than 12,000 were Chinese, about 8,000 Mexicans, nearly 9,000 Filipinos, more than 3,000 from Colombia. Canadians accounted for about 36,000 encounters. Most other demographics account for less than 1,000 encounters for the year.

“The point is, he was all about immigration from the southern border and those immigrants, or those migrants, look a certain way. So it seems to me it’s never really just about immigration. It’s about a certain type of immigrant and so now we have this —” Hostin said as Griffin continued to try chiming in.

“Can I just clarify though?” Griffin said.

“Can I finish talking?” Hostin snapped back.

“Yes,” her co-host said.

“Thank you. So, it’s okay for Russian oligarchs to come over, it’s okay for people with money to come over, but it’s not okay to provide a path to citizenship, people who have been here, like the DACA recipients, for other people who look a different way, that’s the point,” Hostin said.

Griffin reiterated her point that any immigration crisis on the northern border has little to do with Canadians sneaking into America.

She said:

“Just to clarify, because there is a border crisis on the northern border and it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the southern border [because] the numbers aren’t as high. It is not Canadians crossing from Canada into the United States. It is Mexico and India [that] are the two largest places that people are coming [from.] Because they’re seeing that it’s actually easier than going through the cartels and going through a more secure southern border. So if they have the resources, that’s the northern immigration crisis. It has nothing to do with Canadians.”
