Cenk Uygur ‘Optimistic’ After Trump’s Victory: ‘MAGA Is Not My Mortal Enemy,’ the ‘Establishment’ Is

Cenk Uygur, the founder and CEO of the progressive media outlet The Young Turks, called himself “optimistic” after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election because his “mortal enemy,” “the establishment,” has been “defeated.”

“I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m more optimistic now than I was before the election, even though I was so against the guy who won,” tweeted Uygur on Friday. “I know now. MAGA is not my mortal enemy (and neither is the extreme left). My mortal enemy is the establishment. And they have been defeated!”

He continued:

It’s not just that the establishment candidate lost, it’s that their media is mortally wounded. The source of their strength was not insipid politicians like Mitch McConnell and Joe Biden. The source of their strength was their propaganda machine – the mainstream media.

Now, online media is strong enough that their oppressive monopoly on the American mind has been broken. Now, we’re in the jungle. They hate that! I love it! This uncontrolled marketplace of ideas is where I’m home. I’d rather be in the populist woods than an establishment prison.

Despite his progressive politics and longstanding opposition to Trump, Uygur has also been quick to be critical of Democrats. Back in January, Uygur condemned Democrats’ efforts to keep Trump off the presidential ballot, saying “I think the voters should decide, whether it’s us in primaries being put on the ballots, or Donald Trump in a primary or general election being put on a ballot. If we think democracy’s on the line, we should actually participate in democracy. We should support democracy.”

And in June, Uygur argued that the Democrats had “become like MAGA” and were in deep denial about Biden’s condition.

“If you think that Joe Biden is a secret dynamo behind the scenes, as the Democrats claim… You’ve got to be a borderline lunatic to believe that,” he submitted. “The guy is in terrible, terrible shape.”
