CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan Can’t Help Laughing As He Reveals ‘Craziest’ Conspiracy Trump Fans Have Told Him
Senior CNN correspondent Donie O’Sullivan had to laugh when he told Elle Reeve about the “craziest” conspiracy he’s heard while reporting on misinformation in the Trump era — but also joked that there was a “kernel of truth” to it.
O’Sullivan specializes in reporting on the fringes of the conservative and pro-Trump movement, and is launching the three-episode Persuadable podcast as part of The Account from CNN program.
Reeve — who covers a similar beat and deals with a lot of unhinged supporters — interviewed O’Sullivan to promote the new podcast, and immediately asked him the “craziest” thing he’s heard.
Once he said it out loud, O’Sullivan and Reeve laughed at the theory that then-President Joe Biden was actually not alive during his term as president, and his public appearances were simulated with trickery:
DONIE O’SULLIVAN: Podcast, I guess, is my naïve attempt at trying to sketch out one part of a potential solution, or at least to have people who might be watching our stories who have no sympathy for the people we interview and view them frankly probably as stupid or extremists or dangerous, to get to a where maybe they could be empathetic. That’s why I’ve done this. That’s what you’re stuck here now.
ELLE REEVE: What is the craziest thing, single thing, single claim anyone has ever said to you?
DONIE O’SULLIVAN: That when Biden was in the White House, that he, uh, wasn’t really there. That in fact, he was actually dead. (LAUGHS).
ELLE REEVE: (LAUGHS)
DONIE O’SULLIVAN: Now that I’m hearing this back. Kernel of truth.
Somebody said to me that, yeah, that he wasn’t actually there, that it was a green screen, that the White House was empty, that the Oval Office media, everything you’re seeing, green screen in Hollywood.
So that one was definitely out there.
